I know we have an HD thread but I feel this would be ignored there.


Maybe I just need glasses, but I can't really tell if there is a difference between HD TV, regular DVDs, and Blue Ray disc. I playing DMC4 on PS3 in 480 vs 720p I can totally see the difference.


I watch TV on a 32inch Samsung slimfit which is 720p/1080i. I play computer, Xbox 360, and PS3 games on my BenQ 22" (w/ HDMI) monitor.

Is it just that my displays aren't big enough to notice the difference? I mean I watched Sunshine on iTunes (rental) and then on blue ray same 22" monitor and it seems the same.
 
Maybe you should have taken a moment to actually read some of the HD threads. Then you would have found the answer you were looking for repeated a gazillion times.
 
Well, most people say that you can only see a big difference, not only on a bigger set, but with 1080p through HDMI..

In my case, I don't care..as long as it plays on the TV and there's sound.. :p
 
720p and 1080i are largely the same thing.

1080p is required to notice the full difference between an upconverted dvd and a blu-ray.

Dvd is - 480p, can be upconverted to 720p/1080i
Digital cable (HD) - 720p/1080i native.
Bluray / Hd-dvd - 1080p

you need more tv to see full benefits... that being said, the leap from 720p to 1080p is less noticeable than the leap from 480i to 720p, but should be noticeable none the less.
 
You're probably losing some picture quality with your monitor since it's not 720p or 1080p native and monitors are generally bad at scaling.
 
I see a huge difference in a 27' Samsung i have in the bedroom. 720p.

So....i don't know man, something's wrong with your TV?
 
Get some glasses or something?

Maybe your poor eyesight works like a kind of anti-aliasing.
 
I would say you should see the difference man especially on games. BTW do get a new pair of eyes it helped me! :D

Well, he can't tell the difference because he's not directly comparing the two. I bet you if he put a HDTV side by side with a non-HD, he'd probably see the difference.
 
I connected my laptop to the HDTV with a S video and I nearly pulled the plug out in frustration. I'm so unlucky with pc crap. That standard def mess need to go. I didn't understand vga was pretty much the same as component.

can you post some comparison pics? so we can compare.
 
Some people can't hear the difference between a worthless ipod headphone and a pair of quality studio monitors, some people can't see the difference between SD and HD.

Different strokes...

Yeah..
At first I though "maybe he's playing using composite cables..on an HDTV" (which is quite common)...then he started taking about 720's and 1080's..and well, at least I assume he knows how to connect cables.. :p

In any case, the difference from 480i/p to 720p is quite big...
From 720p to 1080 is not..a lot..
1080p, only on a big screen with the proper connections..

If he can't see that, maybe he's just blind (nothing personal Solideliquid, you are hot anyway .. :p)...then he's playing Devil May Cry 4, so that explains a lot.. :p XD

there's your problem. most 'hd' crts can't resolve anything close to 720 lines of resolution. super fine pitch sony crts are the major exceptions.
 
Until I got my 46", I was playing on a 27" (CRT) and the improvement over SD was substantial. Your games and HD movies should practically pop off the screen in comparison to SD.
 
Oh god its the 1080p is the second coming argument again. 1080 vs 720 is totally up to viewing distance and I assume hes not sitting far close enough to need 1080p with 32" tv. There are more important things than resolution, such as color, black levels, accurate contrast, all of these can ruin an otherwise fine transfer.

I hear you though, give studios time to get all their material up to snuff in terms of shooting and mastering HD material, theyre still relatively new at this and as a result some of the discs coming out arent that big of an improvement. However there are movies that look stunning and I defy anyone to not notice the differences on those.
 
Well, nicely upscaled DVD's look better than most "HD" television channels out there. I think the only way to see a big difference is to go bluray.
 
There is a difference. HD for one is in widescreen, so you can see alot more. Look, its much sharper and clear. Although I admit, I can't really tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. Maybe I need glases for that.
 
If you can't tell the difference between 480p and 720p then I don't know what to tell you. That's just weird, and really hard to believe.
 
It's probably because you expected a much bigger difference than what you're seeing.

For some reason the HD effect in games doesn't make me jump out of my seat like HD movies do. I don't know why, I just don't see what the big deal is. I see the improvement, but it's nothing like going from SD to HD in Lost, for example.

ipod headphones and quality studio monitors are like VHS quality video vs. the best 1080p encode you can find.

And there are people who can't hear a difference. Believe me, I've tried.

Like I said, some people just aren't sensitive to certain different sensual qualities.
 
I've found, oddly enough, that if you really want to be wowed by HD buy an older movie from around the 60's/70's on an HD format(an old western would be perfect). They have little to no film grain like modern movies have in HD and most look stunning. A CG animated movie in HD would also be a large difference from SD to HD.

If you still can't tell the difference maybe you need to calibrate your TV better, or get new eyes.

If the TV you're watching on your Samsung isn't an HD signal, then it will look worse than normal TV. Likewise, if you're playing your 360 on some crappy 22" monitor, HD will not look very good. Hook your consoles up to your larger TV and then change between 480 and 720 and tell me if you see a difference, you will.

Oh also make sure they're hooked up correctly. Composite(red, white, yellow) cables will NOT give you an HD picture.
 
well, i can tell when an SD signal is being put up on an HD set, but ultimately it just doesn't bother me. i only have a 20" SD anyway, worrying about a TV i probably wont have for another half decade or more is probably not a terribly good way of spending time.
 
I personally can see a difference, but it's entirely not worth the price, at least for me (in regards to getting a really good TV).

My Xbox 360 games look great via S-video.

You must be watching some REAL shitty HD channels. Or, perhaps, what you think are HD channels but aren't.
 
HD movies have made me interested in movies again. DVDs look like such shit that really the only thing worth focusing on is the dialog, but now with new resolution options you can actually make out the finer details in scenes.

It's because you have a Samsung CRT, I used to have one and it's a piece of shit. I bought a Sony to replace it and it's night and day.

Dude what?! My PS3 is plugged in via HDMI and the xbox is hooked up with VGA. I mean because I only sit like two feet away from the monitor the image should be 720p (just about or a little over like 768(p).

HD channels show a lot of upconverted SD shows. Even a lot of the commercials during HD shows are SD. (like the HDDVD commercial during the Super Bowl, LMFAO)
 
upconverted still looks like crap. I used my PS3 for it too which is apparently an excellent upconverter. I watch on my 22" monitor so maybe that is why, but HD movies look fantastic on it. DVD not so much.

Anyone with proper vision who can't tell the difference, especially side-by-side is lying or not paying attention. See above for example.

Those shots have been scaled down and compressed to oblivion since the original captures.
The Hot Fuzz disc (both sides) is what I show people like the OP though.
 
Wow there really is a difference in those shots. For example in the DVD version you can't read the red sign but in HD you can see it says "JAG".

Perhaps I should look closer, but I really think my TV (which I purchased almost two years ago) pretty much sucks.

That is your problem. Your display is too small to notice any significant difference between SD and HD.

He didn't say what the viewing distance was. If he's sitting at a desk, he should be able to see every line of 1080p. I have a 24" 1080p display next to my bed, and I see every bit of detail.

Proper distance in relation to screen size is required to notice the full difference, *plus* a proper source. Not all movies lend themselves in the same way to HD.

On a 50", from 10 feet, you can't tell detail over 720p. Maybe now you understand your problems with a 32". Check this:

I just got a HDTV. Can't really tell a difference except that a lot of my games are FUCKING READABLE AGAIN.
Holy shit it was almost worth the $800 for fonts.
