From the positve reviews from this board I will be getting the NEC 3500A dual layer dvd burner for Xmas. I am not great with installing new stuff into computers so bear with me. I currently am running Windows Xp and have a Cd burner already installed that came with my computer. (Ibuypower.com computer 1 year old.) Will all i have to do is remove that Cd-rw drive and throw in the new dvd burner in its place? Do i just use the same cables or do I need new ones? (I read that the NEC 3500a from new egg will not come with cables.) Is there anything else I should be aware of?

Can someone also recommend the best software to use for burning dvds for a noob like myself? Nero 6..whatever?

Thanks!

Pop out old burner, insert new. Same cables can be used, when PC powers on it should see the new drive, may need to reboot itself or simply ask you to confirm saveing the changes after it detects new drive.

Just remove the old cdrw and connect the dvd drive the same way.

As far as burning software, I usually use nero 6.

Does you computer have the cd-rw drive only? If not, you will need to screw with master/slave jumper settings. Actually, you might have to anyway depending on the default position for the NEC drive.

Indeed.

That should get you started.

You might also want to try to keep that old drive in the PC if you have room and the necessary cables. You would then be able to copy CDs straight-through, without needing to swap discs.
