I want to build a new PC after I get my tax refund. To gear up I started putting together a preliminary list of parts. I know prices will be different in a few months but I wanted a ballpark. This is what I came up with...

Case: Cooler Master CM-690 - $70
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119137

Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit for system builders - $110
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116754

Processor: Intel Core i5 750 - $200
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115215

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master V8 - $40
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103055

Motherboard: eVGA P55 SLI - $200
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188055

Video Card: EVGA GeForce 9500 GT 1GB - $58
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130395

Memory: G.Skill 4GB (2x2GB) 240 pin DDR3 1333 - $168
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231180

Optical Drive: Sony Optiarc Black - $34
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118032

Hard Drive(s): Western Digital Caviar Green - $85 X 3 = $255
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136317

Monitor: ASUS VW246H Black 24" - $220
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236049

Keyboard: Microsoft ANB 00001 - $15
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823109077

Mouse: Microsoft Black Wireless - $23
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826105153

Speakers: Altec Lansing BXR1121 - $27
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836113014

Printer: Epson Stylus NX515 - $100

Now all of this totals around $1600 and I just realized I forgot to add a PSU so there's another $70 or so.

This just seems like too much. Someone suggested I go with AMD but I know virually nothing about what AMD offers in comparison with Intel. Like what's AMDs version of the i5 or i7?

I like the case as listed and I probably don't need 3TB of storage. I was just splurging a bit.

So can GAF put one together?

I'd like to have at least 1.5TB of storage and 8GB of ram. I don't do heavy gaming but I would like the option to use dual monitors if I choose in the future. Don't forget a CPU cooler. I really like the Coolermaster V8 but I don't think they make em for AMD chipsets.

What the eff....$1600 for those specs is god awful.

Isn't there a "Build a PC" thread on the gaming side?

Why so much on the CPU and MOBO only to go so cheap on the video card? That makes no sense. Also that green hard drive is great for storing files but I would maybe get a black drive as a boot.

The PC gaming computer thread is your best bet. Those guys know what up. Also, it helps to tell us what you plan on doing with the computer.

Quick observations for saving money:

-Get rid of the aftermarket cpu cooler unless you plan to overclock.
-Buy a cheaper cpu/motherboard. AMD's equivalent is the phenom II x4 (I'm not sure whether it's a performance equivalent, do your research)
-Get two hard drives instead of 3. You could still do a raid 0 or 1 with two drives.
-Smaller monitor or different brand (if you don't need 24 inches and are willing to use an Acer or something haha)
