I love EGM
So i found this 2001 honda civic ex coupe. it has 64k miles on it and the dealer is asking 11,500.

i test drove it and it sounds and runs great. now i'm dumb because i don't know what to do next. I didn't want to spend over 10k, So i'm guess i'm going to offer what i can. Should i start with a lowish offer?

how do i beat dealer? how do i buy car!

Dealing with used cars salespeople will be one of the worst experiences in your shopping lifetime.

Good luck, I have no real solid advice. You can try to play hardball .. but they give as good as they get.

If you truely are in no rush for a vehicle ... Calmly go in there and write down your price .. then say "Call me when you can meet this price". Then walk away .. don't let them try to dicker with you.

You are CRAZY to even consider that... almost 5 years old @ eleven five? Plus 64k miles? NO. You will hate yourself after 2 years iif you do that....

offer to sell him your first born daughter

OR

don't buy a civic (jesus) from a dealer. _maybe_ if you can get a proper honda warranty. but honestly i wouldn't bother.

you should be trying to find an EK in decent shape anyways. they have a much more satisfying feel

first, check what the book price is. We in the UK have glass's guide or parkers, which list all used cars and their values, adjusting for mileage.

a 5 year old car should average about 60k miles, so that one is about right. Its a honda, so it should be reliable for many many more than that.

Basically find out what its worth, so you know you aren't being fleeced. Do expect to pay more from a dealer, and find out what your rights are. A simple 3 month warranty might be enough to get it checked out at your local Honda dealer.

you can be pretty sure that they've price it at high nada retail (i just checked and they have).

you should never ever pay high nada retail for a car that common

then lowball or don't buy it doof, but i definitely wouldn't buy it without at the very least a carfax and inspection. in lieu of an inspection, it better have a warranty, since at 64k it's out of factory warranty.

the fact is, for 10k you can do much better than an out of warranty EL

how do you get the car inspected if you don't own it? this confuses me.

You ask the dealer if they mind you getting it inspected. If they do mind, then you run a mile. If they don't, then you pay someone reliable to inspect it. They then report the details of the inspection to you, and optionally to the dealer.

I just bought a used car (at well below the Parkers price in the UK) and that's how it worked for me, anyway...

damn dude! I just got a Civic Value Pack BRAND FUCKING NEW for 12,900 (before trade-in, taxes, title...). sure it's got a weak engine and it's manual (though I do enjoy the manual) but it's brand new and it will get me to where I want to go for a long time.

i think i'm going to offer 9k including tax temps and title.
What are tax temps? I'm looking to get a car too, maybe a Civic, Accord or Corolla. I really don't care what it is but it has to be reliable. Something in the $3k-$5k price range. It seems most car dealerships carry just newer cars that are way over my budget. I'll have to look in the classifieds.

Buying a relatively new used honda isn't worth it.

For a few thousand more you can get a new one, without having to worry about what the previous owner did to the car.

Id go to carmax.

That would be your best bet... For me thats the only place I actually feel comfortable buying a used car. If you go to carmax.com you can see what they have and have it transfered to you for a minimal payment. However they do try to make a little extra money off you with cd players and Satillite Radio so just avoid that.

isn't carmax the company that only sells used cars >= 3 years old? You don't really save that much money from them, it seems.
