i bolded the differences in the specs.. are the differences between core duo and core 2 duo that vast? would the faster core duo outperform the core 2 duo?

are the prices that i can get these laptops for reasonable?

I'd probably save my $250 and get the cheaper one.

Ditto. The cheaper has a faster clockspeed which will negate any advantage the Core 2 Duo gives the more expensive one. If you don't need all that HDD space, save some doe and go with the $599 unit.

I have a satellite, and I actually like it. Recently, however, I had to buy a cooling pad because the laptop would overheat. Also, I hope you don't plan on doing any gaming on it (at least any new games).

I wouldn't worry. It's a big box for a laptop, so it's got plenty of room for 1.73GHz Core Duo. I have a less efficient 1.6GHz Dothan Satellite on a slightly smaller casing and it's never too bad.
