Holy shit, I'm going to crap in the mouth of the next person who makes a laptop thread.

PC? Grab some random Dell within your price range.

Mac? Get whatever Macbook you can afford.

The end.

Someone sticky this.

BS. Any student not considering a Tablet PC is seriously doing themselves a disservice. TPC = tailor made for note taking (unless you can make ASCII diagrams like no other, purely typing away for note taking is teh 20th Century). And there are plenty of models that are affordable.

PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS oh god i am drowning in them
As someone who works on Dells all day (lots of Latitudes too!) I can say it's not bad, but go in knowing that in the three years they WILL be fixing something, be it the motherboard/hard drive/something.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but is there such thing as a tablet PC that is not shit for gaming? I'd love to get one, but I still want to play things like HL2 on it.

there's also this thing called a pencil and paper (ok two things). maybe you've heard of it?

tablets are still way too unwieldly for class, and always having your computer on to take notes is just a distraction waiting to happen

How genius! Why don't we go back to type-writers as well! Screw all that word processing bullhockey!

tablets are still way too unwieldly for class,

And a laptop isn't?

Your lack of focus is your problem. Don't assume that all people have your poor attention span. And if you have a laptop in class, then this point is moot.

wouldn't the whole point of a regular laptop be that you can type much faster than you could write normally? well, i assume most people can :p

Imagine this scenario: You are a math student. You need to write alot of formulas and diagrams. What are you gonna do, ASCII art? Shit, you don't have to be a math student to come across note taking situations where you have to draw diagrams.

Not only that, most professors don't really like click clacking of keyboards during lecture. Really distracting to others too.

And last but not least, type writting notes lack flexibility that INK written notes in programs like MS Journal could provide. INK is vector, so it's quite more flexible than scribbling on real paper, or even cribbling with a tablet via something like Photoshop. Cut, paste, rearranging your notes is quite fluid.

I wish I had something like TPCs when I was in school. All you young 'uns are so damn lucky today.

I'd suggest looking into getting a mac. If you're not gaming, it will provide you with a nice simple, stable foundation for you to do your work.

Just like with any other laptop.

I'm free 2night after my LARPing guild meets.
Can't go wrong with the Dell Dimensions. Toshiba satellites are ok too. I got an Acer because it was a closeout and dirt ass cheap. I had to reinstall windows like 3 days after I got it but it works fine now though. Macbooks are nice but the specs are pretty weak for the money they cost and unless you need to have OSX for something or have money to burn I wouldn't really recommend them. All laptops break easily compared to PC's so reliability is always going to be worse than a desktop that just sits in one spot. There's only three chinese companies that source out all the parts to all the brands out there (yes, even the macbooks) so you really aren't getting anything that different from brand to brand as compared to a desktop really. It's more a matter of which has the best ergos and the least amount of spammy garbage preloaded on it. Make sure it has at least an 8 cell battery whatever you get though.

If I ever end up being a professor in some future life, I'm going to ban computers from the classroom. fart has it exactly right -- pencil and paper is the way to go.

Wtf? I got a dell 9400 with 17inch WUXGA, nvidia 7800 256mb and intel core duo T2400 for around the same price (2k canadian, which should be around that price range in US)

The thing with dell is NEVER buy a laptop from them till there's some killer deals, which happen quite frequently. When i bought my 9400 the video card was free and i had 350$ rebate, a total value of 650$ off the thing.

You know, I teach college courses and I am realistic about it. I only have 18~22 students at a time and I teach art courses, so it may be different with your usual college settings but banning computers from classrooms in 21st century is pretty damn counter productive.

If a student can't be bothered to pay attention in a class that he/she is paying his/her own money on, banning computers isn't going to magically make them pay atttention to you. Doodling away on paper is just as distraction worthy as a laptop (at least it was to me when I was in school). It's about focus, and you can't force them to focus if they have no interest being there. If they want to waste away their tuition dicking around with their laptops, I let them, as long as it's not actively distracting others. It would have been the same if their doodling their fav superheros or fantasy characters using pencil and paper.

I write way too sloppy and in some instances way too slow -- I need my laptop in order to take good notes. If a professor imposed a ban, I'm dropping that class ASAP and giving the person a bad rating on RMP.

I'd like to offer counterpoint... as someone who runs an IT Department in an organization that uses all Dells... from Precision workstations to Inspiron and Latitude Laptops we VERY rarely have to call Dell support to replace parts... it happens for sure, occasionally... but definitely not with any regularity, and I love their warranty service... for our servers we have same day service on parts replacement, on every other machine, next day.
