Hey all, having recently found a job (finally), I finally am going to have the funds to get a decent computer for a change, my current system is too old to bother upgrading so I'm going to be building from scratch.

I'm going to be putting a Radeon 9700 PRO that I'm getting for a decent price in there, and I've decided to go with AMD CPU rather than Intel. I'm going to be salvaging the monitor from my current rig and also a 80 gig harddrive.

My budget is about 1170, any suggestions?

The CPU/Motherboard and RAM are probably going to be the most expensive things. You can get a serviceable case on the cheap even from companies like Antec, and I'll be damned if they're not almost giving hard drives away these days.

Just, you know, plan. What do you intend to do? how long do you intend on doing it without upgrading? Factor that in to how much you're willing to spend.

Also, if you get caught in a bind and have to choose between CPU speed or more memory, go for the latter.

Well I was limping by with a 1ghz Geforce 2 GTS system without much complaint for a fairly long while, it's just that it's fallen below the minimum specs line and I have money to spend so I'd like to go about 1.5 to 2 years without that happening with whatever I get now.

Those questions were rhetorical, but anyway...What minimum specs has your computer fallen below? Do you use the thing for games (or would you like to?) There are a lot of factors here.

Yeah I'm definetly approaching this as a decent gaming PC. I'd want to play games based on the HL2 and Doom3 engine well. (This computer can't play Dawn of War).

No. I have a monitor and video card. (Video card is 9700 pro, mid range, good for my purposes).

Edit: Stability is a big issue for me, so I'm not very interested in motherboards/CPUs that are easy to overclock at all, and I'd like to get good quality RAM and harddrive. How much of a power supply do I need? Should I go for Asus, Abit mobos or would the cheaper MCI, ECS stuff do just as well?

This reminds me, I have a 200GB HD I bought a few weeks ago just sitting on the shelf that I have to install... I just don't wanna unplug everything.
