Help on using a USB drive with iTunes

I've recently begun using a USB drive to store my media. I'm able to load my music collection into iTunes without a hitch. Everything plays fine with no delays to load or anything like that. The problem is that every time I reboot my system and open up iTunes, I'll get "file not found" errors on every single song. I have to remove every song from my library and reload it into iTunes, which takes quite a while because I have a freaking lot of music. Also, doing so screws with updating my iPod. Even though the exact same music is being loaded into the library, the iPod feels it necessary to delete all the songs off itself and reload the re-added, same songs over.

So, can anyone offer advice on how to make a USB drive work properly with iTunes?

Thanks.

Is the USB drive plugged in before you load iTunes? Unless it's somehow getting a different drive letter after you reboot, iTunes shouldn't really care about the location of the music.

Nah, other people appear to have this problem. It looks like it has something to do with the way the iTunes music library records the path or music files. I was hoping somebody had a workaround.

Er, to answer your question, yes it's plugged in and powered up. And it's always drive J.

Actually, any alternatives to iTunes would be appreciated. It's got a pretty interface, but I'm not pleased with the functionality. It also has a billion little options I will never use. I don't actually buy music from the iTunes store, so that isn't an issue.

hmm, I had it work without a hitch by having all music in one folder (and then subfolders of course) and assigning that as the iTunes "music folder" or whatever in the options...

I've noticed that iTunes has replaced some of the filenames on my iPod to nonsensical 4 letter names. I think this was to prevent people from easily sharing the files without having to play them first.

Not sure what you could do, The only short term solution would be to not select the option that automatically updates your ipod when it senses the ipod is connected when iTunes starts (if there is an option)

http://www.gtkpod.org/about.html might be a replacement for iTunes for you since you stated you dont buy music from there.

One thing you can try is to load all the songs into winamp, create a playlist and save it on the a different drive from J. Then open up itunes, and load the playlist.

I was having a similar problem in loading files from a drive and was able to resolve using this way.

This has worked over the course of a reboot. We'll see how it goes.

One interesting thing, is that iTunes randomly lost/misplaced/WTFed about 5 gigs of Brian Eno mp3s. Has anything similar happened to anyone else?
