do any GAFers have transitional lenses, and if so what are your opinions on them? i tentatively put down an order for them today (pending my eye exam tomorrow) and am starting to have some concerns as to their effectiveness and overall use.

getting sunglasses aren't an option - the frames i selected (some ridiculously expensive Armani frame that appears to be made from the blood of 40 virgins) don't have any corresponding clip-on sunglasses, and my vision is bad enough that wearing non-prescription shades are not an option. the flip side is that i don't want to spend several hundred more on prescription sunglasses.

I love my transitions lenses. I've been using them for years now, and I really can't see going without them now. With some of the older models, I had a few problems with the color never quite going away and tinting my vision slightly. However, the new models have eliminated this problem.

I've got glasses with transition lenses. They're good, but they don't get really dark.

I've also got clip-on shades for them. They're needed since 1) what I just said above, and 2) transitions don't work in your car (unless you've got a convertable).

clip-ons worked well for my previous frame, but they aren't an option with my latest frame choice :(

i chose the 'gray' transitional lenses, which purportedly offer a higher shade of tinting than the original brown transitionals. i'm just hoping the transition from light - dark - light isn't too slow. also, does their degree of 'tint' depend on the amount of UV available? ex - less tint during sunset, more during noon sunblasts?

I've never really thought about it all that much, but I think how dark they get mostly has to do with time of day and cloud cover, so it basically corresponds to how much light you're getting.
