You rebooted too? Did you get the latest updates?
First I searched for updates and it said there were no more recent than I already had, then I uninstalled and rebooted.

Your drive is deadddd

My dvd burner stopped reading/writing CDs but read/writes DVDs fine
WHAT?

What does the drive do when it tries to read a DVD? Describe what the drive lights do and the sound the drive makes.

Do you happen to have daemon tools installed?
No(t that I know of).

Drive has no lights, but the pointer on-screen gets a little disc next to it and the driver whirrs as if attempting to read.

It says there is no disc. I uninstalled and rebooted, but it still won't read a DVD. It'll read a CD, but not a DVD.

If it'll still read CD's then there isn't anything software related going on, the drive has failed. It uses a seperate laser to read each, means the DVD laser died on you.

****, I don't think I've even used it once 'til now... except to burn a couple DVDs >:|

While it's highly unlikely, there's a small chance there's something other than your drive that's screwing you up.

For instance (and I know this isn't the case with you), when I upgraded my version of Daemon Tools, my DVD burner went really funky. It wouldn't read anything, and wouldn't burn anything via Nero. The only way I could burn was via Winamp, and after the disc was burned, the drive would still say it was empty.

Perhaps you could try something like booting to a Linux Live CD (like Knoppix or something), and testing the drive via that. I'd imagine this only works if you've got 2 disc drives, and you could boot to the other one and test the one giving you problems.

You thought you did? Please, explain. Explain everything that you did.
I right-clicked on the driver, clicked properties > hardware > selected the appropriate drive again > clicked properties > clicked the driver tab > and clicked update driver. It couldn't find any software more suited to the hardware than I already had.

In the same driver tab, it says that my current driver dates back to 2001 :\

i'm saying update your Drive firmware, log on to your DVD Drive manufacturer, then look for any new firmware, then flash it by using a DOS based program, or a Windows-based firmware updater.

Oh, I didn't realize they were two different things. It worked!

Thanks!
