I know, it's sad :( I hope if they ever make a 20th Century Boys anime (well, when more like it), it gets popular. Of course, there were about 3 or so people other than me who ever mentioned Hajime no Ippo here until it was in its mid to high 30s or so (and about 70 or so for One Piece), so maybe Monster can have a late popularity revival also.

As much as I enjoy watching anime, I've always had the "manga version is always better" stance. My girlfriend has been enjoying the Monster anime so far quite a lot, but when I read through the manga I just felt so much more attached to each character.

As for Hajime, I've never seen the anime, got quite far into the manga but kinda quit several volumes. It would be nice to see Monster anime get a huge popularity, but it's the same scenario all over again.. those that do enjoy thought-provoking and serious anime are more than likely to stick with Monster than anything else. Those that enjoy the quick-fix anime like Naruto, One Piece or Hajime are more than likely to stick to that genre from here on out. I know I am not the type to glue myself to those anime series that are hugely popular, but I'm quite content knowing that Monster kicks arse and is easily up there on the favourite series list for the past few seasons - even if it is just my own opinion.

eh? I'm following the anime... =\ Everytime I update the Monster thread, no one seems to talk about it with me... but oh well.

Monster easily ranks in the top five anime being subbed right now.

25 should be coming soon they say. Last episode I've seen is 21 so I'll go through 22-25 in one session. XD

Yeah, Monster is kind of like Hikaru no Go for me in that it's more of a thinking series and thus can be construed as slow.. so if you have read the entire series' manga, the anime can feel a bit slow... but going into it blindly will result in quite a ride and I wish more people would take it!

Kenzou Tenma, a Japanese brain surgeon in Germany, had it all: incredible skill at his work, a rich and beautiful fiancee, and a promising career at his hospital. However, after becoming disenchanted by hospital politics, he chose to save the life of a young boy who got shot in the head over the life of the mayor. As a result he lost the support of the hospital director, as well as his position in the hospital and his fiance. A short time later, the hospital director and the doctors that replaced him were murdered, and once again he was catapulted back onto the top. But as the chief suspect of the murders, Tenma did not get a easy life. As a matter of fact, it seems that the boy he saved was much more than he had appeared to be... Now to clear his name and to correct his past mistake, Tenma must get to the bottom of these and other murders, and investigate the truth of the Monster who is behind all of this.

Also beyond the basic plot synopsis, it is very worth noting that the writing is nothing short of extraordinary. It is decidedly NOT your typical anime fare.

the manga was good, but it dragged on a bit too much midway through. don't wanna get caught up in all that. plus knowing the story kills a lot of the suspense.

I fail to see the point or appeal of the Monster anime for people that already read the manga. I finished the manga before the anime was released, and after watching 2 episodes I realized this would be the best thing since sliced bread for people that never read the manga because of the ultra-faithful adaptation. But for people who already read it, it's like reading it again, pretty pointless. :(

Reason #893 why I don't read manga. :D

Monster rocks so much, it's my favorite anime series out of the ones that are running now.
That's why I'm so damn frustrated about not seeing any new episodes for friggin' weeks!!!! It's killing me. :(

hooray for monster detractors. i do have to say that 20th century boys is much better. the way it changes focus from time to time keeps you on edge. now that it's almost as long as monster, it still hasn't lost any steam compared to monster, which was incredibly gripping until i started to wonder when they'll ever get this guy already. i think started to stumble around volume 12 ish. and then the ending that makes you go hmmm....

and thanks to meier and whoever else recommended 20th century boys. if you like monster then you should seriously track it down and go read it.

Agreed that 20th Century Boys is AWESOME. Also check out Pluto, I picked up the deluxe volume 1 last weekend, it's awesome. Came with a reprint of the original Atom arc that the story is based on too (Greatest Robot on the Earth).

Yep, 20th Century Boys is incredible -- Naoki Urasawa is a manga god. It is certainly the type of series that is probably more "recommendable" to most people than Monster as well, so I'd love it if more people gave it a shot.

For me personally, I prefer Monster to 20CB, although that could of course change as 20CB progresses and nears completion. It's pretty amazing how "fresh" it still feels after the 16 volumes I've read -- every time the end seems near, he manages to draw it out further and yet avoid it feeling forced. Grade A suspense.

Agreed, Monster is THE best anime I am currently watching. Fantastic character development and nothing is as 2 dimensional as in other anime generally. I just hope it doesn't lose steam. It currently has been going great. I love Tenma
