Sometimes, you don't really care about the lyrics...but the beat is slammin'. What are some of your favorite beats? Doesn't matter what era they're from

First four to pop into my head today:

1) Welcome to the Terrordome - you can loop this thing like 4 times just playing pick the sample. And then you gotta play it a couple more because you just kinda got lost in the beat, period.

2) Natural Born Killaz - This to me was fucking unbelievable, in how Dre/Sam Sneed managed to get something approaching a hard-rock vibe into a G-funk beat.

3) Get By - I still think this is Kanye's best beat. I know. I'm old.

4) Shook Ones pt. II - I still don't know if there's a single beat that's ever sounded this sinister.

BONUS CUT: How can you name hip-hop instrumentals and not think this at least once

Xzibit's Paparazzi.

Thanks to The Sopranos.

This is a great fucking cut. This and I think "K.I.M" by EPMD really turned me onto the idea that classical music just needed more drums. Before that I was solely on the funk/r&b thing so far as sample sources. Paparazzi had me invading completely different sections of the record store.

There are some people I know for whom this beat is basically all the definition of hip-hop anyone needs. Like, if someone wants to know what its' about, they'd just play 'em that.

Straight Outta Compton-NWA Arguably the greatest rap beat of all time. This shit set it off

93 Till Infinity
One of the greatest West Coast rap productions ever

Young Gs feat. Biggie, Jay-Z, Puffy
Beat is velvet smooth, vintage 90s New York sound

Hood Billionaire-Rick Ross
Lex Luger beat. Lowkey, might be one of the top 10 best trap productions ever

Victory-Diddy, Biggie
I dare you to listen to this beat and not wanna throw hands at someone. Rocky.

FUCKWITHMEUKNOWIGOTIT-Jay Z, Rick Ross
Again, one of the hottest trap beats EVER!

Made You Look-Nas
Arguably the best east coast boom bap beat of ALL TIME.

Clan in Da Front-Wu Tang
One of the grimiest beats ever made. RZA's finest hour

Not a specific song, but Matatabi makes a lot of great instrumental hip hop.

Dejavu
is one of my favorite EP's of his and it's a great starting point to dig into his massive library. Also, free!
