Legendary producer Jay Dee of late '90's Detroit rap trio Slum Village has just passed.
Jay-Dee has produced such classics as "The Light" by Common, "Stakes is High" by De La Soul, Woo Hahh (remix) by Busta Rhymes feat. ODB and countless others.
He has also produced originals and remixes over the last 12 years for artists such as D' Angelo, Janet jackson, The Pharcyde, a Tribe Called Quest and many many others.
Jay Dee recently released an all instrumental album titled "Donuts" on indie hip-hop label Stones Throw.
Jay Dee passed around 8:00 this morning at his home in California of a bone marrow disease. James (J-Dilla) Yancey will forever be remembered as one of the greatest producers in Hip-Hop.
He was just hitting another peak with his recent productions, knew he was sick but didn't think it would be over so fast. RIP.

Holy Shit, that guy produced some classics for Pharcyde. He was a big part of their sound... It was often said that he was one of the few rap producers who could program drums that sounded as if they were played live.

R.I.P.

Check out his discography here:

Notable tracks include:

A Tribe Called Quest - 1nce Again, Get A Hold, Keeping It Moving, Stressed Out, Word Play from "Beat, Rhymes, & Life" CD/LP 1996 (Jive Records)

De La Soul - Stakes Is High from "Stakes Is High" CD/LP 1996 (Tommy Boy)

Tha Pharcyde - Runnin', Bullshit, Splatittorium, Somethin' That Means Somethin', Drop, Y? from "Labcabincalifornia" CD/LP 1996 (Delicious Vinyl)

Q-Tip - 11 tracks from "Amplified" CD/LP 1999 (Arista) (Including Vivrant Thing and Give it What Ya Got)

I hadn't really heard much of his stuff since 2000 or so, but in the late 90's he was on fire.

EDIT: Odd thing is that I was just listeing to some old Pharcyde and wondering what this guy was producing the other day...

His new stuff is great too. His beat for Copywrite (That's A Wrap) was one of the best beats of 2005 and his new albums Donuts has some great stuff as well.

Yeah, and he was supposed to drop some more stuff on Stones Throw this year... Wonder if that'll ever see the daylight.

yeah he was pretty damn tight. Jaylib is one of the best hiphop duos ever (Jay Dilla and Madlib) with their album Champion Sound. I never got a chance to see Jay Dee, but I saw Madlib live at Amoeba. Sadly he passed away. RIP

Your lack of respect for Common makes me sad. Common's my favorite mc and by default, the beats on his albums are some of my faves. Mostly done by none other..JD.

RIP
True, he did produce a lot of Common's Water for Chocolate album. It's just that the most of tracks I'm familiar with from Common weren't by Jay Dee, like "Sixth Sense" and "Go!" He did do "The Light," which is an awesome song.

He has some killer beats on Be. I wish the album had more songs on it, because Kanye takes up just about all of them. I love Kanye and all, but I would have liked to see more producers (and songs) on that album.

My goodness I'm loss for words, very sad night for me indeed.

RIP DILLA
you'll be missed

word was that Jay Dee was supoposed to do half the cd but couldnt due to health reasons ...
I didnt take it as true but maybe there was something to it.

Damn. The track Be is still my favorite off the entire cd. I got The Love Movement a couple weeks ago too; great production. R.I.P.

people say to stay away..

IHO The love movement is a better product than Beats Rymes & Life.... not as much commercial stuff.
Seemed like a true effort to do what they do best ... it's not their best album but far from terrible on any level.

Come to mind theres a classic Jay-Dee track on TLM titled "BUSTA'S LAMENT"

Did Jay Dee produce that little interlude guitar instrumental on The Love Movement? That was the best track on the CD, which otherwise really wasn't that good...

EDIT: The song was called "For Moms."
