HK Disneyland has Castle Envy; Enlarging and adding Frozen Land, Marvel Rides

Apparently they had castle envy when compared to the recently opened Shanghai Disneyland.

The Walt Disney Company’s smallest theme park resort, Hong Kong Disneyland, which lost money amid declining attendance last year, will get $1.4 billion in enhancements as part of a colossal six-year growth plan.

The upgrades, announced on Tuesday afternoon in Hong Kong, will include an entire section themed around the animated movie “Frozen,” a first for any Disney park. Plans also call for a hugely amped-up castle, multiple rides based on Marvel superheroes, a new nighttime show with fireworks and fountains, and a performance venue based on “Moana,” an animated musical that arrives in American theaters on Wednesday.

Construction will begin in 2018 and conclude in 2023, with new offerings coming online almost every year during that period. The plans are subject to final approval by the Hong Kong Legislative Council and the Disney board.

No idea why they got castle envy when Shanghai's looks like a Costco building with turrets. But I do have to say their new one (which is being built on top of the existing one) doesn't look bad.

This is a first btw; Disney has never redone a castle before.

Also, the main Frozen ride is reportedly a clone of Epcot's Frozen Ever After.

This was showed on my FB for a few weeks ago. It was rumored that theirs castle will not be destroyed before new castle is completed. It's gonna be a awkward scene if they are gonna it behind the current one. lol

The mockup makes it look like the old castle is the front of the new castle?

One cool thing about the castle change is that this now makes Disneyland's unique again, with every park having its own distinct castle, with the exception of Tokyo Disneyland copying Disney World's.

ridiculous that they are cloning a ride designed to replace an old ride. but Disney gonna Disney.

Guess they want it ahead of Disneyland's Frozen E-ticket that's coming up in 6-7 years?

it looks like the new castle incorporates all of the elements of the current one

It looks super strange and it'll be weird to see such a tall structure rise from a similarly-sized base to what they have now, made weirder by the old castle still being on the bottom.

Disney has had some weird problems with nailing false perspective lately (Mickey Town in Shanghai is all out of whack) so I hope they can pull this one off well.

Now just throw out that "private cabana tents in the park" idea at Florida and we're probably good for a while.

Near empty theme parks are such a downer. Sucks out almost all the fun from the experience. Hope they get more traffic in the future.

Hong Kong air quality isn't that bad, especially where Disneyland is, on an outlying island.

Not sure why you put buildings in the background--Hong Kong Disneyland is not anywhere close to the urban areas.

Yeah was there last month, no air quality issues (nothing above any other Disney park anyway. Note it rained in Shanghai the entire time I was there so couldn't gauge anything for that one.) But man HK felt like ORLANDO. Muggy, hot, dripping with sweat after five seconds outside, etc. It was like "I'm at a park that looks like Disneyland in Anaheim, but I feel like I'm at the MK HELP!"

Rather sad about the castle. I liked that there was one other park with a small one. Also Shanghai's castle looks better in person, can't really explain why. Well it's not like I didn't have to go back one day, since Iron Man was sitting there, not opened, but hey you can go to the gift shop! But technically we need to go back to Paris first. Only Space Mountain I've never ridden, and we were so damn jet lagged we have a lot of trouble even remembering what rides we went on!

They will replace the Buzz Lightyear Astro Blaster ride with a Marvel themed version:

There will be an Avengers ride where they currently have Autopia:
