I have absolutely no qualms with that price. Now if I could just fix that damn stuttering...

:lol

I don't think that will ever get fixed.

I've had a bit of luck reducing the stuttering by increasing the heapsize in the game.

I had it running pretty well last fall, especially considering my rig, but I forgot to document what I'd done to acheive that before upgrading my mobo/cpu over the summer. And after reformatting/reinstalling windows, I haven't had the time or the energy to take the few hours to really play around with it again.

I've also heard rumors that the stuttering isn't as bad on ATi cards, and I've been needing to replace my GeForce4 Ti4600...

What happens if you forget your steam username/password, and have moved to a new E-Mail account? Are you fucked?

Very good price indeed. I was gonna buy it no matter what, but damn that's cheap. How long do you think the thing will be? 6+hrs?
They said it would be shorter than HL2, but didn't say how short.

I can tell you that's certainly not true. :( Personally I think it has something to do with the audio engine.

Half-Life 2 Still Stuttering?

If you're still experiencing unintended audio stuttering problems in Half-Life 2, Erik at Valve invites users to email him personally, and he will do his best to get you all fixed up. He notes that the problem has been found to occur due to a very wide variety of causes, so it's more effective to help on a one-on-one basis than through generic troubleshooting.

:lol Yeah right.

Valve doesnt give a damn about the problem.
The problem lies somewhere in the Source engine and after countless patches and fixes a LOT of people still have it.

Simply put, they can't fix it. No email or anything is going to help the people that have this problem. One-on-one basis for everyone that has this is not a viable solution.
Only at GAF would someone bitch when a developer offers to help fix a problem one-on-one.

Yup gotta love GAF :lol

But I dont really think he's going to answer thousands of mails from pretty pissed off people. Maybe a few will test this and get help but the problem is still going to be there for the masses.

Not that I care anymore since it works for me now, bring on Aftermath!

I wonder how long it will be at that price?

EDIT: For clarity, I'm talking game length, not length of time at that price.

Actually, it has to do with the fact that they stream data off of the hard disk. The actual "stuttering" was just a symptom. Valve worked on it and removed the "audio stuttering" part, but the hitching still remains. It will never be fixed because it's how the engine was designed to work (obviously not intentionally to have stuttering, but to stream data off the HD)

All of the stuttering "fixes" are just cludges to lessen the effects. It doesn't actually fix the problem. The only way it could be fixed is if Valve retooled their Steam engine and that simply isn't going to happen. I've read oodles and oodles about this problem and had many conversations with people who were investigating the problem. It's Valves fault, and no one elses - but they aren't going to own up to it, and they certainly aren't going to fix it.

My advice, think twice before you buy the game. If you decide you want to buy it, don't be surprised if you experience the hitching. If you already have the game, and experience the hitching, check out

The Steam forums still has individuals who can give you "their fix" that worked for them, but it's not guaranteed to help you.
