I would bang a hot farmer!
LAS VEGAS--The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) handed out awards during the 8th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards tonight in Las Vegas. About four hundred attendees watched as Valve founder Gabe Newell accepted nine awards, including First Person Action Game of the Year, the Innovation in Computer Gaming award, and ultimately, Game of the Year.

Katamari won 2 awards, wow

PoP2 got platform game of the year, and no awards for MGS3

GAFFERS CRY

The festivities this year were a far cry from the raucous, noisy, smoke-filled, and open-bar-graced event of last year. One of the few spikes in energy this year was the passionate acceptance speech which followed the naming of ESPN NFL 2K5 as Sports Simulation game of the Year. "I think we did all we could do to fight a big contender," the Sega rep accepting the award said as attendees cheered.

looks like the awards are based more on politics then the actual quality of the games :lol

JUSTICE.

It took 9 awards, actually, and only lost one in which it was nominated, and that was to Katamari Damacy, so all is well. These men, are men of high and wise intellects, those far greater than those of which who champion lowely, archaic videogame softwares such as Halo 2. I weep for those such sad and hopeless individuals.

I have to say overall these awards are pretty good. Nothing I just flat out disagreed with. Plus Fable won the one award that it actually deserves, Outstanding Achievement in Original Musical Composition. Now release a soundtrack Microsoft!

Wow, Paper Mario won (console) RPG of the year. That would be my second choice, behind KOTOR II, obviously.

Metroid Zero Mission rightfully won handheld GotY.

UYA was robbed by PoPWW. What the hell, guys.

Fable deserved the award in sound achievement. However, I would've liked to have seen Katamari nab it instead.

Somebody post the little kid crying :lol

Your poster child didnt win, so they are all teh biased :lol

Wario is right.

PoP2 is probably the only one of those i can take issue with.

Yay for Fables 2 awards, Danny Elfman does it again.

Nominees for...

First-Person Action Game of the Year
**Halo 2 (Microsoft/Bungie)
GoldenEye: Rogue Agent (Electronic Arts/Electronic Arts LA)
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (Nintendo/Tetro Studios)
The Chronicles of Riddick (Vivendi Universal Games/Starbreeze)

Goldeneye:Rogue Agent...wtf? How much $$ did EA pay for that one?

Wario is right.
But my poster child did win, so I am joyus and pragmatic!

(And, in case you couldn't tell by my previous, unbelievably thick hyperbole, it's a fucking joke.)

Ahh well, at least Halo 2 won Console GOTY, Online GOTY and best Sound :D Nice to see Molenuex picking up more awards for Fable. Brilliant game

Lots of games got recognition; Halo 2 took home Best Console Game, as well as sound design and online play awards. A solid showing sure to prevent a 500 page thread. Exept for that little MGS3 issue..... :lol

Holy crap, MGS3 wasn't even nominated for art direction, sound or anything O_o.

In the meantime, Sly Cooper 2 and R&C3 gets nominated for Sound Design, and Doom 3 and Sly 2 for art direction? Seriously, WTF?

What? Your response made no sense in the context of his post, which praised them for choosing Half-Life 2 over Halo 2. Try reading next time? *shrug*

Good for Half-Life 2...it definitely deserved it. Anyone one plays it knows that. :)

i played it, and to be honest, its not goty to me.

after the first area, the game doesnt really acknowledge that you exist as much and everyone just fuckin ignores u unless you do what they tell you to do.

wow, GOTY!

Metroid Prime 2 > Half-Life 2 in art direction.

MP2 didn't get the recognition it deserved, but Nintendo had a good amount of representation. MP2 is better, more polished, and more fun than Halo 2. Oh well... no need to bark up that tree at this point.

No. I liked MP2 a lot, but nothing about the game was all that amazing. I certainly never felt like the artwork in it was fantastic or breathtaking.

Half Life 2 over Halo 2 -- set pieces over gameplay. Not really surprising, but still disappointing.

Halo didn't deserve AIAS GOTY in 2001, so I guess it's payback anyway.

So you thought Half-Life 2's was better? Both games are beautiful, but the way Retro sets the mood with an excellent marriage of natural and artificial environments is awesome.

Well, in the 1998 AIAS awards it was Half-Life versus Zelda: Ocarina of time, and Zelda won nearly all the awards. So I guess it's Valve's payback time.

You make it sound as if Zelda wasn't deserving

Cockles, can we get a nintendo damage control pic please?

Thanks ;P

HL2 wasn't the best game of the year, it doesn't even make my top 5... Strange that HL was by a shitload of mags also Game of the Year, while it wasn't so special at all. Makes you wonder, is it possible for Valve to just buy that title by a shit load of mags....

At the time if I would have had to pick a GOTY, I sure would have picked up Zelda. But now seeing the longevity and impact that Half-Life got on the industry, I think I'd still pick up Zelda, but I'm really not as sure. ;)

Half-Life ended up being the more important game. Neither Half Life nor Zelda is much fun over 6 years later, though I think HL holds up a little better.

What a shitty year for gaming when two FPS are battling for GOTY..

Considering the last three winners were Call of Duty, Battlefield 1942, and Halo, this should not surprise anyone. GDC awards seem to have a lot more variety to them.

1997 - GoldenEye 007 (N64)
1998 - Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
1999 - The Sims (PC)
2000 - Diablo II (PC)
2001 - Halo: Combat Evolved (XBOX)
2002 - Battlefield 1942 (PC)
2003 - Call of Duty (PC)
2004 - Half-Life 2 (PC)

You see a trend? 5 of the 8 winners are FPS and 5 of the 8 winners are PC games.

Uh, wasn't The Sims first released in january 2000?

And one game is japanese. Damn cultural imperialists. :lol

I'm guessing the voters on these awards are predominantly Western? I guess if it makes them feel like their games hold a candle to Japanese software, then more power to them.

WINNER OF THIS YEAR'S AIAS GAME OF THE YEAR AWARD IS.... SOME WESTERN GAME WITH GUNS!
