HL2 Wins AIAS GotY

I'm guessing the voters on these awards are predominantly Western? I guess if it makes them feel like their games hold a candle to Japanese software, then more power to them.

WINNER OF THIS YEAR'S AIAS GAME OF THE YEAR AWARD IS.... SOME WESTERN GAME WITH GUNS!

Yeah, some japanese RPG with a spikey haired effeminate male lead character should have won! Generalizations are fun!

Well, look at the winners the past four years and tell me you don't see a trend.

Joke member, right?

Yes, I'm a joke member because I see self-congratulatory circle jerk in progress and wanted to comment on it.

What stands out about MGS3's art? Honestly, it's an amazing game, but it isn't the most beautiful thing I've seen.

You really are serious, huh.

Care to name some games that you believe stand out in that department?

The game features the best cinematography yet to have graced the gaming world, fantastic world and character designs, beautiful usage of lighting, and a real sense of polish (for the most part). The sound design stands out in the fact that there are many unique streams of audio that are played and nearly every one of those sounds can be traced to a realtime source. It also features an incredible soundtrack that is used expertly (the tricky part) in addition to solid voice acting. It's a very strong game, from an artistic standpoint.

Some random pics...

Let's contrast that with some superior technology...

Far Cry destroys MGS3 from a technology perspective, no doubt about it. However, it also highlights just how impressive the art direction in MGS3 actually is...

I can agree with the sound being great, as well as a nice use of lighting, but the character designs don't stand out to me.

Thing is, going from those screenshots, yes, MGS3 is beautiful. That said, those screenshots have had more of an impact than anything in the game itself, so far. Maybe I am blind.

And I definitely don't think anyone would defend Far Cry's visuals from an aesthetic viewpoint.

Agreed. Less gamers like him please

Says the person with the Halo avatar. *shock* (that doesn't mean I don't like Halo, though. Pretty good game.)

Poor Alex Anderson.

It must suck to have your head so far up one country's ass.

My comment about "not holding a candle to Japanese software" was an exaggeration, and more of a response aimed at (as I said earlier) the voters who gave themselves a self-congratulatory circle jerk. Of course I can't expected you to have known that, but I wanted to clear that up. Especially since you're Tre` (someone I like and respect) and not some random cuntwad.

Just for the record, I could care less where a game comes from if it's fun. Some of my favorite games are made by Neversoft, EA Sports, Visual Concepts, Ubisoft, and the best game ever is made by a certain dude from Russia.

But yeah, most of my favorite games are Japanese. So what? I have no cultural or ethnic ties to them. I just like their software. When series like Ace Combat, Castlevania, Gran Turismo, Hot Shots Golf, Metal Gear, Mega Man, Metroid, Shinobi, Silent Hill, Zone of the Enders, Zelda, the Mario games, Phantasy Star, Sonic the Hedgehog, Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter, Virtual On, Contra, King of Fighters, Metal Slug, Daytona USA, Resident Evil, Ridge Racer, and etc. (and these are just the SERIES of games) - hell yeah, I'm going to have a preference.

There are some genres that western companies may be better at developing games for, mainly RTS, FPS, flight sim, sports games, and massively multiplayer online time wasters but I generally do not find western games to be as compelling as a whole. Some of this may be chalked up to being primarily a console gamer seeing as the best examples of most of the genres I previously mentioned are one PC. I'm not saying western ganes *can't* be awesome, nor am I denying that games like Quake III, Halo, [insert your favorite RTS here], Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and Madden 2005 aren't great games, because they are. There just aren't enough of them in a wide enough range of genres, IMO, at least not given my particular tastes. It seems like half of the games currently made by western game companies are fucking World War II sims or licensed garbage.

Make whatever you want to of that. I would deserve all this ridicule had I truly thought that "western games don't hold a candle to Japanese games." I was really just saying it to spite the voters of these awards. But of course, I can't blame you guys for reacting to it, because it'd be a pretty stupid thing to say by itself. I should have made it more clear it was a joke, I guess. *shrug* I don't like blind loyalists that much either.
