Hollywood actors guild to seek strike:

LOS ANGELES – The Screen Actors Guild said Saturday it will ask its members to authorize a strike after its first contract talks in four months with Hollywood studios failed despite the help of a federal mediator.

The guild said it adjourned talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers shortly before 1 a.m. after two marathon sessions with federal mediator Juan Carlos Gonzalez.

SAG, representing more than 120,000 actors in movies, television and other media, said in a statement that it will launch a "full-scale education campaign in support of a strike authorization."

Talks broke down after the studios sought the right to create productions for new media, such as the Internet, using nonunion actors and without paying residuals, said Doug Allen, SAG national executive director and chief negotiator.

Residuals are payments to actors that are made every time a production airs, such as TV reruns. Many SAG members rely on residuals for more than half of their income, Allen said.

"They're asking us to bless a system we believe would be the beginning of the end of residuals and that's a very scary thought for working actors," he said.

The producers' alliance condemned the SAG decision and said it remains the only major Hollywood guild without a labor deal this year.

"Now, SAG is bizarrely asking its members to bail out the failed negotiating strategy with a strike vote — at a time of historic economic crisis," a producers' statement said. "The tone-deafness of SAG is stunning."

SAG's national board has already authorized its negotiating committee to call for a strike authorization vote if mediation failed. The vote would take more than a month and require more than 75 percent approval to pass.

SAG wants union coverage for all Internet-only productions regardless of budget and residual payments for Internet productions replayed online, as well as continued actor protections during work stoppages.

But the AMPTP said it was untenable for SAG to demand a better deal than what writers, directors and another actors union accepted earlier in the year, especially now that the economy has worsened.

Earlier this week, the producers' group said it had reached its sixth labor deal this year, a tentative agreement on a three-year contract with the local branches of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts, accounting for 35,000 workers.

The stagehands alliance accepted Internet provisions that were modeled on agreements with other unions, the producers group said.

Actors in prime-time television shows and movies have been working under the terms of a contract that expired June 30, with the hope of avoiding a repeat of the 100-day writers strike which shut down production of dozens of TV shows and cost the Los Angeles area economy an estimated $2.5 billion.

Yeah, if the actors go on strike then the actors won't be available for the creating more episodes (just like with the writers strike).

Going on strike during a deep recession... that's a solid idea.

Say hello to the Starving Actors Guild... coming to a soup kitchen near you!

Ahhhh... thank God there is no equivalent to this in the gaming industry. If this comes to fruition I can see gaming getting an even bigger boost as the preferred entertainment form. At least temporarily.

If they destroy another fucking TV season I will fucking kill someone. Tom Cruise preferably since he's expendable.

What the fuck do actors need to strike for?
Not all actors make as much money as Tom Hanks and Angelina Jolie.

Those actors that make $20 mil a flick are the exception, not the rule.

The gap between what the top billers make and what the rest of the actors make has widened a whole lot in the last decade. The big ticket actors stand in solidarity with their guild to look out for the actors who actually ARE barely getting by.

But yeah, this will really fuck up LA big time if this happens.

This... especially now. I could see possibly posturing for more money or benefits during better times, but come on. Look around you, SAG. The economy is poised to enter its deepest state of crisis since the Great Depression and you idiots think now is a good time to ask for more money?

Screw you, SAG. Screw. You.

But this wouldn't affect Reaper (or Supernatural) because those actors are members of AFTRA. So this could be awesome news if the CW's other shows start shutting down and they need to plug holes. We'll see.

I don't really need a tag, but I figured I'd get one to make people jealous. Is it working?
Isn't this essentially the exact same reason the writers went on strike? They want their contracts and benefits extended to the "booming" new media sectors of digital distribution? And aren't the studios still making the same argument...The internet doesn't count, no money for you?

like they don't make enough money already :lol

We're not talking about the Angelina Jolies and George Clooneys.

However, this couldnt come at a worst time. The public wont be as supportive as they were with the writers strike.

Too many people see the big $$$ that actors can make in Hollywood and this potential strike will only make them look really bad. If anything, they might end up being demonized.

Pretty much, and the studios aren't even coming through on their end of the deal with the writers. The WGA is going into arbitration soon to deal with this.

A union representing people who have taken up the most self serving and impractical profession known to man decides to demand more money during to onset of a global economic slowdown. Good luck with that, you shameless douche bags. :lol

The Film Actors Guild?

:lol Just saw that last night actually.

On topic though, I hope this doesn't have to go to a strike... Seriously, it's the worst thing that can happen since a lot of people will be out of work in a recession, and we won't get any entertainment by any actor in SAG...

Come on Hollywood, throw them a god damn bone!

The irony of all the people complaining about them doing this during a recession is that Big Entertainment is practically recession proof. People still see movies and watch TV when they're poor. The fact that people are still going to be angry about another interrupted television season is proof enough of that.

And you can bet that new media is still a growing business, and may even have its growth accelerated by the slowdown as people buy into the new 'free' online media more heavily. Never mind that whatever deal they come up with now is going to last well past the end of this recession -- see the shitty royalties they get on dvds for an example of an anal raping lasting 20+ years. This time the deal is even shittier.

Consider me firmly on the guild's side. Again. People who can't stand a little tv interruption and side with the rapists just because they don't get to see a new episode of Lost for a while need a waaahmbulance.

Hey, hey--they could take that money and use it to make even more progressive, ahead-of-the-curve films that show us all how to live... and how to love.

Actors are truly our unsung heroes. God speed, working people of Hollywood. I know you deserve it.

I think so. People have been talking about a SAG strike for a long time. I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner.

Not that I disagree, but surely you can see how it will play in the public? People here aren't complaining about the business strategy, they're complaining about the horrible publicity it will get. We're potentially looking at a million out-of-work autoworkers and David Schwimmer wants a raise for his next romantic comedy?

I'm moving in January to LA, and presumably attempting to join SAG. Fucking dammit.

And no, I can't...what do they call it? Cross the picket line? Where I just work anyway. SAG blacklists your name for eternity, and once the strike is over, you'll never get a job in LA again.

Egocentric fucking actors. You know the absolute minimum standard for a day player per diem is $675? WHY DO THEY WANT MORE?

As with the writer's strike, I'll say that this sucks for my viewing habits but will probably be beneficial to my career in the near short-term.

Ugh.

God dammit, god fucking dammit. We already did this people. Change the word "actor" to "writer" and nothing has changed. Lets just agree on the same thing the writer strike did and move on.

There is a difference: the actors guild is an order of magnitude greater than the writers guild and a very high percentage of their members work very irregularly, making residuals all that much more important.

(Not necessarily picking a side, just saying that saying it's the exact same thing is oversimplifying it)

The Writer's Guild wanted to bring gaming scenario writer's in, but it didn't take.

Like others said, its gonna be harder for the guild to get unanimous support from everyone this time.

PS. if there is a strike, that probably would destroy Heroes chances of staging a comeback season after last year.

Heroes has had more than enough chances already. It's just a shark-jump generator now.

Interestingly, I talked to my active-SAG-member acting professor today and he stated he severely doubted they were going to strike based on internal memorandums and whatnot. At least, not immediately.

I'll believe him when I...uh...don't see it. = (

I haven't watched any tantalizing tv shows or movies for 2 months already. So how does it affect me? None!
