Holy crap my USB enclosure is making my HD hot as hell....

Ok could you be more verbose perhaps in offering some suggestions? Should I look at one of the aluminum ones? I guess mine is plastic.... do any come with fans? Should I look at those? Is there a preferred manufacturer etc?

How do you know it's making your HDD hot? I just got one and apparently even though the case is super hot, it's pulling the heat out from the hdd itself which is a good thing. What are you doing to judge the heat level?

Pulling the hard drive out of the case when I'm done using WinHiip... the hard drive itself is hot as hell as is the USB enclosure, both are separately hot. I have to let the hard drive sit a few minutes before I go pop it in my PS2 I'm so concerned about how hot it is.

What brand is your USB Enclosure? Is yours made of plastic?

I have an aluminum enclosure (both firewire/USB 2.0) with a built in fan. The HD doesn't get hot at all.

DarienA... If it's made out of aluminum, then it's supposed to, somewhat, as it disappates the heat. Not too hot to touch though.

Stop using Maxtors.

I notice that the same drive in an open (unsealed) enclosure runs 5x as hot as it does while in the PS2.

I'm shopping for a Seagate today. ;) So I should definitely get aluminum... even an aluminum without a fan is ok?

You can get a 200GB Seagate for 100 bucks at Newegg... Quiet, cool and it's not a Maxtor.

Why are you using WinHIIP so much anyway? There are only a handful of dual layered games out there. The majority can be ripped by the PS2.

As for the enclosure, get aluminum + fan. They cost a bit more, but they they're worth it.

I'm using WinHiip because it's faster than HDAdvance 2.0... patience? Not here. ;) and I'll pick up a Seagate today, and an aluminum cased usb enclosure today.... I have to check my receipt I think I can still return this Comp USA case -15% restocking I think... thanks.

If you like waiting 35 minutes as opposed to 2-3 with WinHiip for a 4 GB game than ripping through the PS2 is fine I guess.

Edit add 5 min to rip the original game to the PC with DVD Decryptor. So 35 vs <10

That's really not worth the effort or wear and tear on your HD/enclosure/network adapter. The most time it could possibly save you is like 5 minutes. A 4GB games, which many aren't, taked 20 minutes on the PS2. Go take a sh!t or play w/ the baby.

You can fuck up your data going back and forth like that. Happened to me. I hosed a 200GB partition. Not worth the risk IMO. Just leave it in the PS2 unless you have to rip a dual layered game is my advice...

Why can't we rip over a network yet via WinHIIP? Are there any other apps that do that? I have ExecFTP on my PS2, but it's too cryptic for me to figure out how to use properly.

Well, truth be told... I'm running two Maxtor drives in PS2s. They fit. Western Digitals do not without modification to the NA.

But Maxtors do sucks.

They have the highest failure ratings among HDD manufacturers, they run hot compared to all other reputable brands, their noisy...

They just suck compared to the WD's and Seagates of the world.

They have earned this reputation w/ me. My first one failed with out warning and I lost all my media. I was using it to store music and video. They were nice enough to send a replacement. That failed in like 3 weeks, or at least started to. That's just unacceptable.

What's wrong with Maxtor? I had a spare one lying around and I threw it in an enclosure. It was supposed to go in my Xbox but all the new live bannings made me abort that option. I'm using it as a media server and now you've got me worried about it crashing =)

Marty does your HD itself feel very hot when you pull it out of the usb case after having it on for awhile? It looks like the one you have does not come with a fan?

DarienA...

Compare the temp after a few hours in your PS2 compared to just 10 minutes in the enclosure... Huge difference. It was barely warm after taking it out of the PS2 (was playing GTA:SA for like 3 hours right before, and that game streams data constantly off the HD).

The encosure is not to blame. They're designed to do what they do, hot or not. The drive is the culprit in regards to heat.

Oh yeah I noticed that when inside my PS2 it barely gets warm... I was simply thinking that's was because the PS2 had better venting to carry the HD generated heat away from the HD in it's case as oppose to the enclosure which doesn't seem to have any vents therefore the HD generated heat has no where to go....

It's not a ventilation problem. I hooked up a Maxtor drive without sealing the enclosure so that it could breath. Entire drive was exposed, with only the interface (molex/eide) connected to it.

Within 10 minutes, I could've scrambled an egg on the b!tch.

I was thinking tonight of running the drive with only the bottom part of the enclosure connected but looks like you've already tried that experiment...

Yeah, Maxtor drives always seem to run warm, although I've owned a few and they've all lasted quite awhile. You'd be surprised the type of temperatures most computer hardware can endure for years without a hitch (the inside of your average laptop while running is something of a sauna), but yeah, I'd rather an HD that ran cooler, mainly because it's not functioning in a vacuum and heating up other components as a result of its own temperature. My 9800 Pro is putting off enough heat as is.

I don't pull it out of the case. I never thought there was a reason to disassemble it, especially when I'd have to unscrew it. A lot of enclosures don't come with a fan. The casing acts as a huge heat sink in a way. I too was worried about the lack of fan, but the cases are supposedly designed this way and work.

They're entirely too noisy though... 3 of the models I've had anyway.

The one I'm using as my network storage drive is pretty quiet. I don't even notice it being on except when it blinks for access every now and then.
