Home Theater-age (I have picture but no sound)

Hello, OT! I was wondering if you could help me one last time with my home theater.

I've recently gotten all the components together; the TV, the sound system, and the Blu-Ray player. The Blu-Ray player just came in today.

So, I happily set it up, connected the BR player to my receiver, and... well, I have no sound. So I look up the troubleshooting area in my manual, and it says that if I have something that uses audio and video, only video will work. If I want audio and video, I have to connect it to my TV.

This doesn't sound right. I thought HDMI was supposed to support both, and my receiver was supposed to support both. I'd understand it a little more if only the front speakers worked, but nothing works at all. No sound, just video.

Right now, my connections are: BR player -(HDMI)-> Receiver -(HDMI)-> TV
Is it supposed to be: BR player -(HDMI)-> TV -(HDMI)-> Receiver ¿

If so, do I still get surround sound? 5.1/7/.1?

Halp, GAF! My family's hyped for the HD experience, and now I'm stuck!

Your receiver doesn't pass audio through HDMI. Unless you spend good amounts, most of them don't

You have to connect your BD player up to your receiver via Optical Cable.

Also ... at least its this way for me PS3. I had to set the audio output setting in my PS3 to pass the audio via bitsteam through optical calble.

Hold on... really? I thought the appeal of HDMI was that it was one cable for both functions. : /
What if I don't have an Optical cable? Would going the BR player -> TV -> Receiver route still give me surround.

Edit: Yes, I'm using a PS3.

How are you going to get sound from your TV to the receiver with no optical cable? Just go out and buy one if you're in a pinch, or order one online for a dollar. What model is your receiver?

No, the TV's HDMI out usually doesn't pass through sound sources that aren't OTA broadcasts.

The TV is connected via HDMI to the receiver.

My friend brought over his PS3 once and connected it to the TV. We got sound from the sound system, but I wasn't too preoccupied whether it was surround sound or not, since it was just a temporary connection. But since this is a permanent connection, I want to actually make use of this blasted sound system (7.1).

The HTiB I bought is this Onkyo set.

I'd rather avoid running out and purchasing something.

Edit:

Full disclosure, then.

The TV is a 50 inch Panasonic Plasma and the blu-Ray player is the BC-less 80 GB PS3.

I'll run out and buy the optical cable if I absolutely have to, but... god damn, I can see why consumers have trouble adopting this damned HD business.

Yeah dude the MANUFACTURER'S site says you need optical cables.

The HTS6100 passes through audio and I believe that's the lowest grade HitB that Onkyo puts out that will do so. I recently just received mine and got it hooked up. It's worth the extra $100 or so to do that.

Optic cables are cheap though, and Monoprice is your friend.

Sorry to bump this, but I have the exact same problem.

But, I have no idea how to know if speakers have support for optical cables. I want to buy fairly cheap speakers, but from what I can see, they do not seem to support it (?). Are there any cheap one, for example form logitech? I've looked at these two for example:
X-540
Z-4
