Horizon Steel Frontier developer wants PlayStation release, but it's "not something we can decide on our own"

On the reveal of Horizon Steel Frontiers yesterday, there was one big question on everyone's lips. Why is it not coming to PlayStation?

After all, Horizon is one of Sony's most prolific first party franchises, with over 30m copies sold across PC and PlayStation consoles. But, despite this, the upcoming Horizon MMO from NCSoft is currently only slated for PC and mobile. What gives?

In the time since Horizon Steel Frontiers' announcement, executive producer Lee Song has shed a bit more light on why NCSoft's game isn't coming to PlayStation, suggesting excluding the platform was not NCSoft's decision.

The Horizon Steel Frontiers developer told Japanese outlet 4Gamer that a lack of PS5 release was the "most comment reaction" following the announcement (via machine translation). He added that NCSoft has "no reason" not to bring its game to a PlayStation console.

"We would like to do it," the developer continued, "but it is not something we can decide on our own, so we would like to proceed with discussions."

It's been speculated, therefore, it may be Sony's decision not to release the game on PlayStation. Eurogamer has asked Sony for further comment.

That doesn't really imply that it's not up to NCSoft. The guy seems to be speaking on the perspective of the development team, not on NCSoft's.
And it's not like he can, either, that Xbox controversy from a few months ago is reminding of the fact that people don't know that being the executive producer of project management within a production development unit is not the same as being an executive level employee on a company.

It's VERY obvious that it's Sony that's blocking this at this point.

PC is about to have more Horizon games than PlayStation. It's genuinely retarded. Especially when you consider other mobile games like Genshin, ZZZ, Wuthering Waves seem fairly popular on PlayStation.

why would sony block a third-party published game on their own platform

They don't want the competition for their own Horizon Live Service game, I'd assume. They are scared, because they know deep down in their hearts the Koreans are better at this than they are.

Then why would they even agree to the licensing deal?
The only answer is that NCSoft has no interest - right now - in funding the development of anything other than native iOS and Android versions.

Guerrilla is making their own multiplayer PS5 Horizon game, they don't want confusion with the other game that is mobile conceived.

For the life of me i don't understand this decision. So you spend almost a decade from the moment you present a new IP to releasing its first game, then its second game as a PS console exclusive game...then release on PC....and you don't release it on the platform that has the most fans and made that IP actually happen?

Why investing on a game to fail this miserably? Are they expecting everyone to run to their phones for this? Aren't they after that revenue from all gasha games? Why not make more money by releasing this...you know...in your own platform?

Is this supposed to be a gotcha moment? And for a mobile game lmao.

Anyway I don't care about Horizon (or Fire Emblem), I just think it's funny.
It's the way they do mobile games. Super Mario Run was only released on IOS also. These companies don't feel like mobile and AAA gamers are the same audience and I tend to agree for the most part. This game does look like it would work on consoles so not sure why they didn't do that. It seems closer to a Genshin Impact\Mihoyo game which is a company that puts their games everywhere and they work great on all devices.

To be fair gacha games make most of their revenue from mobile.

Hermen is crazy.
Hermen H saw those attractive women in the trailer, quickly called his closest conseliere neil cuckman, and they both came to the same conclusion- those women are not ratchet/masculine enough to ever enter playstation platform.
They look at that roided up gabi garcia pic:

I know...but it's releasing on PC as well so a PS version would also make sense. If it were mobile only this would be a non issue.
I'm not sure yet but apparently the PC version might only be an emulated version of the mobile game. Not sure if we have confirmation yet.

NCsoft released Throne and liberty on Steam but for this game it's only coming to NCsofts store which is also an IOS\Android emulator.

It's also releasing on PC, the Nintendo game you linked isn't.
Which I did on the very general context of platform holders' IPs not releasing on their own platforms.
And yes, it's releasing on PC, but it's still a mobile game. Purple is NCSoft's software emulation solution for Android titles.

Ok that makes more sense. I thought it was native pc version.

Won't be long though before we see PlayStation PC games releasing day one on PlayStation though. Then there will be no reason to own a PC. The magic is pretty much gone from this title anyway l just knowing that it might end up on PlayStation one day.

Knowing that the gameplay is based on touch controls for phones crashed all my hype at once.

Looks nice but it probably play like shit or very basic\easy.

The developer more than likely isn't speaking against his own company. They want to release it on PS4 and PS5. Somebody is standing in the way and I doubt it's his boss. He's saying it's NOT NCSoft's decision.

Nobody really cares if this mobile MMO comes out on PS or not (the gameplay looks pretty basic) but it's useful for the console wars I suppose, I'm not interested in that Horizon online that Guerrilla is making either.

That's fine, ncsoft would be able to get it emulated on console too if they were allowed to.
Regarding having their software emulation solution available on consoles, they said in the past that "there are many hurdles to cross" for it to happen.

This happens way more than you think. As it stands, we're still looking at a mobile-developed title without even a native PC version.

Sony was going to lose either way. If this had been announced for PS5, fans would just bitch about not wanting live service games from Sony. People need to make up their minds. If you were in the camp that demanded Sony to ditch their live service ambitions, then this game not being on PS5 shouldn't bother you.

Okay? And? I can't find funny that a brand new Horizon MMO (that look great btw) is not releasing on PS5? Is this somehow forbidden?

As I said I just think it's funny. Nothing more, nothing less.

You know that Steel Frontiers is literally a mobile game, right?
Is it ONLY releasing on mobile? BTW it's not a real question we both know the answer.

Yeah, I bet publisher approval is the biggest one, that's what they're saying here implies.

Most were mad that Sony "themselves" were spending over 60% of their video game budget on Live Service games. Not the existence of live service games in general.

Right, they don't have problems with other live service games. They just have problems with Sony's live service games.
