OMFG HOLY MOTHER OF MARY IN HEAVEN I CANT BELIEVE IT WTF WHERE ARE MY SEDATIVES AAAAHHH
I just got off the phone with Zang YiZi....I told her I just saw House of the Flying Daggers and how the movie, most notably her performance, BLEW ME THE FUCK AWAY!!!. I then asked her if she's ever been out with a black guy and she said no, but she'd like to give it a try.

So I pick her up at around 8:00 in Chinatown, and the first thing she says is how I'm cute and well built, and asks if I'm a basketball player or some sort of athlete. I said "No, but I am a player" :p

Aaaaaaanyway.... I continue to tell her about how she nailed her role and how surprised I was at her athleticism. I told her she is by FAR the best female action star working in Hollywood today, and how she could whip Trinity from the Matrix's ass any day!

I told her how awesome the story was and how the environments and scenery were nothing short of BREATHTAKING!!!!. I said the only movie that comes close as far as visual effects go is Star Wars RotS and The Matrix.

Then I told her how much she turns me on and how this film has made me fall in love with her, and she just smiled in a very shy way and said, "Thanks, I'm flattered"....... She then asks, "By the way, what if I told you I'm all hot and bothered right now, and would like to have your baby?!" .....I just smiled and said, "Well, it's no surprise, I have that effect on all the women I go out with. Let's go back to your place, put on some Isley Brothers, and do the nasty to 'Between the Sheets'"..... She said, "Cool, I'll even talk dirty to you in Chinese while we're gettin our bump and grind on"

I then told her I would post about our night of passion on GAF. She was like "That's cool, but you know they're not gonna believe ya right?" I said "It's all good honey pie, they don't believe shit I say"

I'll upload pics later.

Bottomline is, HotFD>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Hero>>>>>>>Crouching Tiger>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Onk Bak!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, just no. Daggers was a major disappointment. I could barely see the whole movie.

Hero on the other hand, one of the best movies ever.

Awful awful ending. Rest of the movie rocked. It's so weird how asian movies end on a completely irrelevant note.

So uh... what happened to all the soldiers coming to attack the House of Flying Daggers and kill their leader? NEVERMIND THAT.

That was left up to the viewer's interpretation...

Bah who cares that wasn't the focus of the movie. ;)

Anyway I've liked her ever since I caught The Road Home years ago(it's not an action or martial arts movie so don't bother if that's what you're looking for).

It's Ziyi.

House of Flying Daggers is soulless. I'm not too fond of this new school of wuxia(big arthouse directors trying to do something different) and it's emphasis on visuals over everything else.

The first 2/3 was good, until they started with the Infernal Affairs-like plot twists, then it was just ridiculous. And, as a Chinese, I don't really rate Zhang Ziyi.

Hero was much better with Maggie Cheung, but the most impressive individual in those films is probably Christopher Doyle the cinematographer, also responisible for the beautiful films by WKW.

House of Flying daggers further reinforced my opinion that asian cinema needs better editors to fix their pacing and cut scenes that have no need to be there. Too much art and flash can be bad. They could also use some help on screenwriting. Please stop making long and seemingly important sub plots and then leaving them hanging with no wrap up at the end or any bearing whatsoever. Also try a little harder to explain whats going in your film and the characters and don't wait till the last 20 minutes of the film to have one lengthy boring monolgue explaining everything then end the movie abruptly with no climax and bubbles in space.

If you guys are considering Hero one of the greatest movies ever, you all need to stop watching Hong Kong cinema.

Regardless, Takeshi Kaneshiro is a great actor, haven't seen him in House of Flying Daggers yet but he was awesome in Fallen Angels. Few other roles he sucked arse but he's captured it all with WKW's shit.

Other than that....

Amen! There is a deep list of movies better than Hero from Hong Kong... Hero was a great movie but far from the best from Hong Kong.. Not even the best from Jet Li... Tai Chi Master and Fist of Legend hold that honor..

I didn't like Tai Chi Master that much. But then again, I only saw it from SpikeTV.

I think Jet Li's best movie is far and away, Fist of Legend.

My significant other and I checked this out last weekend, and we were mucho excited to see it. What a disappointment. It was a beautiful film, there's no denying that, but all the plot twists and whatever couldn't save it from being as shallow as a drool puddle. We took it all in stride until "I thought you were as hot as fire... I guess you're as cold as water," at which point we could no longer take the movie nearly as seriously as it was taking itself. Ending was hilariously melodramatic and pretty much pointless. I want my two hours back. I'm glad my friend lent it to me, and we didn't drop $18 going to see it in the theatre.

You have fine taste sir, though I suggest you rewatch Tai Chi Master (Donnie Yuen version)
Also:

Drunken Master (Jackie Chan)
Drunken Master 2 (Jackie Chan)
Iron Monkey (Donnie Yuen)
Dragons Forever (Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Yuen Bao)
Prodigal Son (Sammo Hung and some other dudes)
Warriors Two (can't remember - may have confused it with Prodigal Son as haven't seen it in ages)
Five Deadly Venoms (see above)

Hero has Hong Kong talents but isn't strictly a HK film. Zhang Yimou's attempts at the wuxia genre weren't that well recieved by people in Hong Kong either. It always puzzled me why the west liked it so much, and it's worrying that Chinese cinema is pigeonholed into one genre.

And I don't think Takeshi Kaneshiro was in Fallen Angels, he was in thefirst part of Chungking Express, the guy with the pineapples. Fallen Angels was Leon Lai, who is going to be in Tsui Hark's 'Seven Swords', which will be a proper Hong Kong wuxia film.

The Tai Chi master blowwws, and yeah Hero was a mainland picture, not a HK one. I'm looking forward to The Seven Swords from the master of Wuxia himself Tsui Hark.

Who me? No way man. I just don't like movies that say they're about Tai Chi but involve little to none of it. If only people knew that The Tai Chi master is what Wo ping wanted FOL to look like, then they'd understand. I think jet's best work was in OUATIC, not fighting wise, but as far as the script and overall production, wow. Tsui hark is the king of Wuxia, he brought it back from the dead and now he's gonna show Ang lee and Yimou how they're suppossed to be done. Come on, a movie with Donnie Yen directed by Tsui hark and choreographed by lau kar leung. You just can't go wrong with that.

i thought hero Was WAY too pretentious(sp?) and action scenes really did suck.

HOFD was melodramatic but atleast it had some cool action scenes.

Perhaps the reason you were dissapointed was because you watched it subbed. Try watching it dubbed. It's much better.

When Centipede threw the needles in Toad's ears; I wept. :lol

Seriously, best tongue-in-cheek martial arts flik outside of The Last Dragon, but not fine art by no means, (if that's what you were hinting).

It's funny, because most people I know in Hong Kong and China thought House of Flying Daggers was a load of rubbish. For me, there's also a huge difference between movies like HoFD and Ong Bak - one goes for melodrama, the other for straight-out action. Apples and oranges.

If you want quality viewing from Hong Kong, my personal faves include:
- Fat Choi Spirit: excellent comedy, but most of it will be lost on you if you don't know how to play mah-jong.
- God of Cookery: Stephen Chow's finest. Ever. Understanding of the Chinese take-out culture required.
- Shaolin Soccer: white people usually like this more than God of Cookery because it's of a sport they vaguely understand.
- Infernal Affairs: great cop movie. I think Brad Pitt is trying to do it in English. Forget the sequels - they suck.
- Fong Sai Yuk I and II (I think it's called The Legend in the US): some of Jet Li's best fighting, and there's comedy, too.
- Enter the Phoenix: I laughed till I cried at the gay humor; and the writer/director who plays the bad guy knows how to fight and make it look really good.

Are you shitting me? I can't stand dubs, and I've watched more than my fair share of foreign film. The quality of the movie wouldn't improve by taking out the original dialogue and replacing it with some in English. I can read and watch at the same time. It was mostly just really boring, and trying so hard to be relevant, and pretty much stupid. Far too much of those things for me to give a good goddamn.

I need to actually sit down and watch Hero. I was half watching it since my wife ordered it on On-Demand and it bored me to tears just listening to the convoluted story and people kabob'ing themselves in melodramatic fashion.

Never heard of "God of Cookery", but I loved Shaolin Soccer - not for the soccer but because it was genuinely funny as hell. Then again, I'm not white either :)

Um, it's kinda stupid to compare films like Ong Bak and HoFD, but whatever.
Imo, CTHD > Hero > HoFD.
Ong Bak was great for what it was aiming to be.

PS: this thread's original post is dumb.

I hear her performance in 2046 is pretty good for someone like her.
I've yet to see it, but I must first rent the "prequel" movies.

I recall seeing Hero with a girl I was sorta interested in and she said it was the best film she ever saw, and much better than Crouching Tiger. I lost all interest in her immediately afterwards.

It always makes me laugh, the Asian cinema purist who wail and gnash there teeth because they fear all Asian films being pigeonholed with CTHD/Hero/etc. and then proceed to make pointless comparison by lumping all Asian films together.
