How Cheaters Are Ruining Counter-Strike - STRG_F (German Investigative Series) Investigates

I just came across a new documentary by STRG_F titled "Wie Cheater Counter-Strike ruinieren" ("How Cheaters Are Ruining Counter-Strike") and I'm going to watch it right now. I thought it'd be great to share here for anyone interested in CS or esports.

STRG_F is a German investigative journalism format produced by public broadcaster funk (ARD/ZDF). They specialize in deep-dive documentaries on youth culture, internet phenomena, and current controversies - often tackling topics mainstream media overlook.

I'm not expecting anything new or groundbreaking in terms of research, but I appreciate that channels outside the usual bubble are covering it too and helping to shine some light on the issue.

For everyone who doesn't understand German, there are auto-generated subtitles available.

Premier above 20k elo cannot be trusted, countless posts on reddit and HLTV about accounts with 5k+USD worth of skins cheating their asses off, the only use premier serves is as a warm up for faceit

the fact that we are forced to use a third party platform to play proper match making is pathetic

If we could launch our own severs like PC games did in the late 90s and early 2000s, this wouldn't be that big of a problem. People just could invite select people and that's it. Or kick someone they suspect of cheating. But of course, that doesn't work with the live-service model companies have a hard on for nowadays.

Is it worth watching? Anything new?

If you're part of the CS community, it's not really news. It's more of a documentary for people outside that bubble. But I think it's nice to see some attention on the topic, since this game generates huge profits and still can't manage to respect players' time by implementing an effective anti-cheat system.

This is the last multiplayer game that has stuck with me over the years and that I still regularly play with friends. But honestly, you can really tell it's just gotten frustrating, and Valve isn't doing anything about it. I've completely lost the ambition to actually get good at the game or to really dive into it. Now it's just something to pass the time while casually hanging out with friends on TeamSpeak.

I only play casual Office nowadays, and even there it feels like every third game has a cheater

There's a good chance we've already crossed paths on Office - by far my most played map, simply because it can still be mindless fun.

It's amazing that devs/programmers still can't find a way to just stop cheating.
Even with good anti-cheat systems, there's no way to control what people do on their own computers, and cheaters keep finding new loopholes. Game devs can slow them down and catch some, but stopping all cheaters completely isn't possible unless in a controlled environment like a LAN where the PC's are monitored in person.

Counter strike hackers are a tale as old as time, I even used one myself that I coded myself as a test back in the days to see what the fuss was all about. It completely takes out the fun for me, and I immediately deleted it. It dawned on me that the only people who use it are not playing for fun, but to fill a void in their lives that can only be filled by winning at something they cant lose at. They are by nature weak people.

Nice! Office has that perfect blend of chaos and comfort, it never gets old

I just wish Agency was in that rotation

I mean this is part of PC gaming period. Any decent MP game is going to be filled with cheaters. It's exactly why I hate this crossplay shit everybody wants. No thanks I just want to play with other PS players (I don't mind Xbox as well) and that's it. I don't want to help fill in PC lobbies that everyone abandoned because all they do is cheat.

Crossplay isn't the enemy, lazy devs and garbage anti-cheat systems are

Acting like console lobbies are some cheat-free wonderland while ignoring Cronus Zen users, strike packs, and soft aim merchants is pretty bad. You think crossplay is the problem? Nah, the real issue is spineless devs letting cheaters run wild everywhere

And let's not pretend console players don't benefit from busted aim assist so strong it might as well play the game for you

The proliferation (or at least the perception) of cheating drove me away from competitive multiplayer games to more co-op or casual multiplayer games.

They were always right, even if some of their flesh was weak.

It's amazing that devs/programmers still can't find a way to just stop cheating.
In another universe somewhere you're posting "It's amazing that hackers still can't find a way to successfully cheat in a video game".

Yet non of the mentioned ways of cheating come close to the actual, code executable cheats, one can find on PC.

Consoles that have not been modified to run unsigned code, cannot run aimbots, wallhacks and similar cheats.
And those that have been modified are getting banned pretty fast if they connect to the manufacture's network.

Sure, consoles don't get traditional PC-style hacks running unsigned code as easily, but that doesn't mean cheating is some rare unicorn there. Devices like Cronus Zen don't need to run code on the console itself to give players a massive, unfair edge

Never new certain hacks were also available on modded consoles!

As massive as you might consider it, there is no comparison to getting headshot through smoke, or the enemies always knowing your location.
