How come Assassin's Creed Shadows wasn't nominated for Game of the Year even though Odyssey was?

If anything it's weirder that it got nominated in 2018, given that it didn't review that well (83 metascore).

I dunno, must have been a mistake.

AC has never been a GOTY nominee level franchise.

2018 was a bit of a weak year but there's definitely a few games that should have taken that spot (and Spider-mans for that matter).

Dead Cells
Hollow Knight
Smash Ultimate
Shadow of the Collosus remake
Into the Breach

Tend to agree and I've always been a pretty big AC fan. AC 2 and Black Flag are the two exceptions, imo. The rest have usually been fun, mindless open world romps. The summer action flicks of gaming that might show up for the special effects categories at the Oscars.

It wasn't that weak compared to others?

RDR2, God of War, FH4, SSBUltimate, Monster Hunter World, Hades, Hitman 2, KCD, Subnautica, Among Us, Detroit, Spider-Man, etc..

The year was fire for RDR2 alone. Yes, I'm biased.

Very historicaly inaccurate in a series that's supposed to thrive in historical accuracy, while it's also unoriginal as 3 other games did the formula before it, plus there was the controversy of picking the one black character of all Japanese history who was never actually a samurai as the "samurai" protagonist, and upon realising their dudu they started making last minute changes to downplay his "protagonist-ness" thus making the two characters uneven.
Hasn't Odyssey also been accused of being historically inaccurate though

Shadows was ok, but never felt "fun" to me.

Odyssey is fun as hell and a game I still get cravings to go back to.

I'd say it's pretty top heavy, there's definitely a fall off at a point.

Hades was 2020 btw, though Hollow Knight and Dead Cells were 2018 so your point stands. Both those should have been ahead of AC.

Yeah, I meant Hallow Knight instead of Hades. So many damned games and time flies, sadly.
