How do I burn video to DVD?

Sorry for sounding like a complete newbie, but anyways -

I just finished a project in Sony Vegas, rendered it as an NTSC DVD compliant MPEG file and now I'm stuck. I read somewhere that I have to 'author' the file before I burn it, i.e. create menus etc.

I just want the video, no fancy menus or anything.

How can I achieve this using Nero? Is it as simple as going to make data disc and clicking on the MPEG file?

Uh why don't you try placing a DVd into your burner. opening Nero clicking burn image then select the mpeg and then clicking burn.

I only have options to burn data or audio disc. When I say burn image, it says it's an unexpected file format.

What you're telling me is to convert the MPEG into an ISO, and I'm not sure how to do that.

Edit - I also have options for VCD or SVCD, but I want DVD don't I?

The only DVD option is MiniDVD, and it says I need to use a DVD authoring tool beforehand.

In Nero there sould be an expert mode button... on the lower right when you first start it up.

Wow, I feel like a complete idiot.

Edit - Ok, I see a Video_TS folder and an Audio_TS. Whenever I try to drag in an MPEG, it says it's not compliant, which brings me back to the whole DVD authoring issue. I'm obviously doing something wrong, so please help me out, I suck at this :(

Do I have to encode the file first? I shouldn't have to because I did it in Vegas, didn't I?

So is there any way to avoid the hassle of having to author it first?

As it is, it's not accepting just a straight MPEG and I'm not sure how to convert the MPEG to an ISO like you're saying...

video_ts folder is for VOB files I believe... not sure if that's the only file type that works with it.

Hang on, I found anotehr optino. There's something called DVD Rom burning that lets me throw in an MPEG file. Is this what converts the MPEG to an image?

Nero depending on the version should have an encoder built into it. If i were home I could help you more, but look through the tabs up top, ie files, edit..., and look for something that says encoding/encoder. This should turn your mpeg into a DVd compliant format. Then you will be able to burn it.

On another note you should be able to do it the way I sad to do it in my first post. After you select DVD ISO look in the 2nd or thrird top tab, I can't remember what it is off the top of my head. There should be a burn image link. Click it and it will bring up a window with all your drives. Click C: or whatever drive the file you are trying to burn is find it then double click it. Then simply click the burn tab. Hope that helps.

I'd say if nero lets you do it without having to change file options or doing a data disc, it's a good sign, but I know very little of authoring dvds.

Under Extras there's a tab that says Encode Files, but it only lets me encode audio files??

*sigh* I'm probably going to end up wasting a DVD on this, but I'll just try to burn it straight.

I think in nero if you don't want menus, you can just dump your dvd compliant mpeg into a folder, whether it's the video_ts or the burning rom menu... as long as it lets you drag the file into it, you should be fine.

Ok, dilemma.

I burned the compilation, it worked on my portable DVD player. It went into some sort of file tree and I was able to play it from there.

On my regular DVD player however, I could hear the disc struggling and then a message popped up on the LED screen reading "INVALID TITLE".

Fuck.... so do I have to author it then?

Assuming your mpeg file is DVd compliant it might be that your DVd player doesn't like burns. Have you tried looking up to see if you model is capabale of reading burned disc. Also so if it does read burns it could be the discs. I had a freind who had a DVd player that would only read cheap media brands and no name brand like Sony or Toshiba. It really a toss up at this point assuming the mpeg is correct. Some players will play anything some will only play a certain brand burned on a full moon after Labor day.

Hehe, thanks for the tip, I'll be sure to check.

Could it also be that it's because I'm using DVD +R instead of -R?
