I've got a cable internet connection. My settings:

DSL/Cable Fast
Upload: 40 k/s
Max U: 6

Anything that you'd recommend I adjust?

Also, I'm behind a router. Should I change any other settings then?

Thanks

I had to do some port forwarding stuff to get good speeds on my wireless network - I think that's what you need to do when there's a router involved. If you have to do that, it's not so bad... there are some good walkthroughs on the web. (I know nothing about computers and I was able to do it...)

I limit upload speed to 18 Kb/s that seems to get me the best download sppeds. If i leave it unlimited it uploads at 45 and my download speeds are in the 20's tops.

if its default (youve never changed the pword) it should be blank or something, check your manual

Check your router manual, there's a default user/pass that you can use to get into your router settings, then enter the values for port forwarding in the appropriate place as directed by Bittorrent FAQs.

goddamit, Griese!
forward the right ports and leave everything unlimited. you can easily get popular torrents at 200k/sec+

I get max speed out of nearly every torrent.

Tip 1 Dont use the defaul ports 6881-6889, many people have them blocked, many ISPs have them throttled. Use a different range and remember to port forward from your router.

Tip 2 Use a custom client - I use Bit Tornado, and set your download speed to 'dial-up' - this will give you max download with moderate uploads.

I'm somewhat computer saavy...and I still can't get it right, and I don't know why.

So I'm thinking it's my ISP screwing me over!

Anyways, got a Linksys, and it's set to forward the correct port over a whole bunch of IPs. I don't have a static IP set to my machine, but I'm forwarding it over 5 diff IPs and my PC is always in that range. Both TCP and UDP.

I've disabled SP2 firewall completely (whereas before I forwarded it on the correct ports as well, yes, both TCP and UDP).

But I still get a max of 13kb for a download...the average I get is 2kb though. I only use it to watch TV shows I missed, so I leave it on overnight and it does the job. But it'd be nice if it could go faster since I come home from work and would like to see it that night.

My guess is that Shaw is doing something, and I've searched the net and some people say the same while some Shaw users say everything runs fine for them. I'm in the Calgary area BTW.

OK, I'm at a screen where I've got 'Service Port' on one side and 'IP Address' on the other, with several slots for each. I have no idea what to enter in each. Are there particular numbers that would be best for BitTorrent use? Or does it depend on my system? How would I find out the best ones to input?

Fusebox, I'm using BitTornado. But when you say "use different ports"... which ones?? How do I know? And where would I even enter them? Under Service Port?

I'm pretty sure you can use pretty much whatever port you want (4355, for example). If you want to use something different than the default one your BT client uses, you can, but you have to remember what you chose (like I said, it could be anything).

As for what to input in your router's PF setup, in "Service Port", enter the port number you chose for BT, and for the IP address, enter your computer's IP (to get it, go to Start, Run, typer "CMD", then in the command prompt, type "IPCONFIG". Your IP address is gonna show up. Enter this in your router's setup).

What if you, say, setup your home network months ago and now that you want to check the port forward settings you can't for the life of you remember what name you gave for the router login. Is there a way to reset or a default name to login and change it? I - I mean, you, can remember the password just fine but the login name sadly is a mystery. That would be pretty damn annoying. :(

If it's a Linksys router they usually don't have a login name by default. This gets me everytime I haven't logged into it in awhile.

If you think you got everything right and still nothing then it might be your ISP. What IP address does your ISP give you? If its a private one(10.X.X.X, 192.168.X.X or 172.16 to 32.X.X) the your are screwed. Check the IP of the moddem, not the one on your PC.

Thanks, for whatever reason your post instantly reminded me that the username is 'admin' on all Netgear routers! :D

*smacks head, fiddles with port settings*

Good question alejob, it's actually not a private one. 68.147.*.*

Hmm...I'm gonna redo my network tonight...maybe try WPA encryption this time...

Thank you for your help, folks. I've been using Azureus for over a year now, and have NEVER gotten anything better than the yellow half-smiley face. I was getting only L connection, no R (remote) connections, and even with throttling my upload to a reasonable value, I couldn't get dl speeds higher than 20 kps on my DSL!

For the first time, I have a green smiley face signifying my connect. Thanks thanks!

Are you all leeching legal software and media? :(

:lol you aren't? I bet everyone on GAF is a pirate in some way, even if it's just one mp3.

It annoys me how some people will "look down" on pirates just on GAF to please some make belief forum God.

My problem with my Mac Torrent is that it really slows my whole online surfing now

It has never done that when I used Wifi at Starbucks

but at home using Opitimum Online my powerbook just slows down and I get very slow speeds and surfing the web just seems to freeze up on me during downloads

If anyone knows how I can fix that please post

I never use bittorent to download anything even remotely illegal. ;)

I figure that downloading TV eps I missed is illegal, I'm sure that the networks aren't happy with it.

But I'd honestly pay for these eps if I could download HD versions of them for a price, and view them on my own schedule as they are released weekly.

Now, you'd think that once they release digital versions of their shows for download, they'd get leaked, but I think there could be ways that it can be avoided...

Ie. A player that is registered to your credit card number, and does online verification before you watch the episode. Would there be a way around something like that?

I think that until these networks provide solutions, they shouldn't be complaining as much as they are. I'll gladly pay, many others would too.

Is there anything ethically wrong with downloading TV episodes of shows I love and then buying the DVD the day it comes out? I honestly can't think of anything wrong with it, unless you have a Neilson ratings box.

No, IMO there isn't. But I get the feeling that most people don't do that. People I know talk at work talking about how they have every episode of Futurama, FG, etc. on their HDD...(it's laughable since the quality is probably crap) while the DVDs are widely available. I have no probs with these kinds of people getting busted, but that'd make me a hypocrite in some sense.

Ok, so all the hardwork I did in getting my linksys router to properly work with Azureus went to hell when I upgraded to a new, wireless linksys router. I tried following the directions on the pages linked here, and I can't find anything wrong with my methods.

Yet everytime I attempt to test my connection through Azureus' wizard, I get the same result (regardless of the port I attempt to test or forward), and that is 'unable to test.'

With the older router, I was getting a NAT error, that was easy to fix. But I cannot find any reference or help to the 'unable to test' error. Anyone have any advice?

I upgraded my wireless router's (WRK54G) to the newest firmware, setup a static IP, and forwarded everything, properly, to the same port I was using with my old router (which I knew worked.) But no dice.

If you have a router, preferably you'll want to use Port Triggering instead of Port Forwarding. Basically from best to worst it's: 1. Port Triggering 2. UPnP 3. Port Forwarding

Azureus supports UPnP and most newer routers do too. It makes it real easy because with that enabled in both the app and router, there's no setup for you to do. Port Triggering is a little better because it's entirely router controlled, not software like UPnP.

And I'd say 80% of your total upload speed is a good limit. It'll allow you to browse the web while you're on a torrent and won't clog up the download throughput.

Mejilan:

Just use UPnP. It'll save you a lot of heartache, trust me. I personally have Port Triggering setup but really, if I had any trouble I'd just fall back to UPnP.

Mejilan said:
How exactly do I set up UPnP?

Activate the UPnP plugin within Azureus. Turn on UPnP on your router. That's it.

Once you do that, I'd highly recommend undoing all the port forwarding changes that you've made previously.

Do I still specify a listening port in Azureus, or no?

Do I still run the Connection Wizard in Azureus to test ports?

You're really over-complicating the issue. Just turn UPnP on and see.

Hmmm. I left the listening port the same. Enabled UPnP in Azureus' Plugins options. Removed the Port Forwarding in my router, and enabled, instead, UPnP. I still get a crappy, local connection when sharing torrents.

I was tuned to a ShieldUp service at www.grc.com that tests your ports to see if their truly open or not, and despite forwarding, I ALWAYS passed the test, regardless of the port I tried to forward and test. Unfortunately, a passing test means that the port is secure, and closed. I can't seem to open any ports, regardless of my settings.

I went into services.msc and completely disabled my Windows Firewall, and I went into my Norton Antivirus firewall and made sure that the Azureus executable (and javaw.exe) were unblocked. And I even went into my router and disabled it's firewall. And I still cannot get it to work.

Now, even with my old router, I was using the Norton Internet Worm protector firewall thing, set up exactly as it is now, without a problem. So I don't think that's it. What else could it be?

*slams head against wall repeatedly*

When I set up my comp's new static IP, I forgot to change the port forwarded ip value to reflect it.

THAT'S why my ports were still showing up as closed, and THAT'S why I haven't been able to get optimal (green) BT speeds, instead the crappy yellow.

I don't believe it was such a stupid oversight.
