How do you guys handle hardware launch day anxiety?

looking at the titles that are (presumably) going to be there at launch, i have to agree... this is definately one of the best console launches (game wise) i can remember.

Project Gotham Racing 3, Ghost Recon 3, Madden 06, Call of Duty 2, Ridge Racer 6, NBA Live 06, Perfect Dark 0, Morrowind Oblivion, Tony Hawk, Quake 4... I mean, just those right there have me droolin. I have no idea how I am going to pay for all this, but I will. :)

You're buying 90% of the launch games? WHAT THE FUCK!? I wouldn't buy that many if I were a BILLIONAIRE.

I handle hardware launch day anxiety by not having launch day anxiety. If a console is worth having, it'll still be on the market a few months later, and there is no way in hell I'd buy a console that being made so close to Christmas. Maybe they'll keep quality high, but in order to maximize profits, I'd bet they're doing some rushing here and there. I'd rather wait for the second or third shipment when they aren't trying to meet deadlines.

The games however, I'll buy immediately. Nothing wrong with buying games for a system you don't have, provided that you're going to get one sooner or later of course.

Uh, how much have you seen of those games exactly?

And if TONY HAWK has you drooling, I don't know what to say.

I'd get them for the current consoles if the 360 were not coming out. Gun is another new franchise, but I don't think Activision will let that fail. This is a great launch. Shpankey, I saw you on XBL a few hours ago, you were playing GR 2 while i was playing Halo 2

The TH series may have grown a little stagnant, but it's fun busting out combos, and finally will be able to do it across the globe the right way, and noy by way of XBConnect. The Tony Hawk games are fun, isn't that why we play?

Yes, but he said he's "drooling" over it. As if the Xbox 360 version is going to be something special. The graphics will be a LITTLE better.

So why would you spend a most likely $60 on a game that will already be on PS2, GC, and Xbox for less, when the difference in the game is almost none?

I was just pointing out Tony Hawk is a HORRIBLE example of a next gen game to "drool" over.

The first launches ever I have even taken notice from were PSP's and DS' launches. I got internet in ~2000 but I was only active in gaming message boards since I bought the Gamecube(a friend told me that he wants to buy it to his Xbox(end of the story: he sold Xbox and Gamecube a few month after that, bought a PS2, said that it's the best console ever and now sold it, too :D ) and that was actually the first time I really noticed the new Nintendo console[I have/had all Nintendo consoles before] and I just thought "Hmm, I'll buy it, too, it will be nice as all Nintendo consoles") in spring 2003.
I really think the consoles launches will be great, but I won't get Xbox 360 and PS3 at launch(if the controller and the whole NRev is good(and I really think so) I'll get it at launch definitely). MS and Sony had quite big quality problems with there consoles and therefore I don't want to be beta tester :)

The most anxious hardware launch I ever experienced wasn't actually a launch. I was in Japan. The just launched PS2 was out of stock anywhere in Akihabara until one day I saw lines gathering around some shops at 7:00AM. But it wasnt for the PS2 but rather same hentai-manga-related game release for PSone o whatever it was.

Last day in town, with a plane to catch in the afternoon and no word of PS2 restock coming from the streets, I slept till 10:00 AM. At 11:00 I was again at Akihabara to take some pics and WTF IS ALL THIS PEOPLE DOING AROUND HERE?!?!?.

It was the PlayStation2 restock day indeed. And there I was, in line with other 100, then 200, then 300 people. The line was so long I actually was behind the store. But the line was not moving 'cos PS2s werent there yet. I dunno how to describe it but it was just exciting to be there waiting, looking at trucks coming by wonderin' if they were carring PS2s or not, or looking at clerks for a singnal.

1hr later a truck came and parked right beside me, with one side facing the back of the store where same clerks were preparing to receive 'something'. And then that one side of the truck facing the store opened up with hydraulic elegance and it was full of sweet electric blue packages. People from the line started leaning toward the truck in order to see what was going on and OMG excitment skyrocked when clerks started to shift the goods into the store and putting them in paper bags with some posters and some other extra goodies.

1hr later I finally made it into the store and got my PS2. I never understood the habit of doing lines for this stuff till then. It's really exciting indeed.

The Xbox 360 represents the first launch I've really prepared for. I'd wager I'll walk out of the store more than 90% of the games that day. Test Drive and NBA Live are the no gos, I presume.

When I was a young lad (ages ago) Test Drive was a highly acclaimed series for C64 and Amiga. But the PSX revs were crap, and I've never tried the PS2 ones. I just might give it a chance at the X360 launch.

"... and then I missed my plane. It was AWESOME."

....

"And then I found ten dollars."

I'll be getting an American Xbox 360 and a Japanese PS3.

I won't be getting the Xbox 360 until sometime in Spring 2006. I want to know about all the defects and whether or not the launch games and post launch games held up the test of time. Plus I can get used copies of the game.

Don't talk to me about launch day anxiety.

I called in sick to work on launch day for the PS2 and lined up at Best Buy at 6am. I was 5th person in line. Around 8am the line had snaked up to about 80 people and then a fucking local news crew shows up and this little cameraman bitch starts filming while walking up and down the line and the reporter was asking random people how excited they were. I was sweating balls hiding behind the fat lady in front of me PRAYING that they wouldn't film me and have my boss see me on the 6 o'clock news. Luckily they didn't.

Gamecube was the only one I have ever pre-ordered as well, even though I have bought quite a few consoles at launch. I probably wont need to pre-order a 360, even if I do decide to pick it up on the first day.

So you wont be joining in with next gen XBL gaming??? Come one man, its going to be real fun, Nutter and Cerrius should be getting it, we';; be playing that particular game. You know, best technical engineers ;)

sell a few drums of oil, you should be fine for launch

I'm most likely going to buy the 360 at launch, but it's still not 100% locked in. Firstly it depends on how many of my friends will also be getting it. If I'm the only one with a 360, then I might as well not have it since I'm getting it mainly for easy to access online play with my friends back home.

I usually find a place, if pre-orders are an option that's done, if it's first come first serve, the night before I'm sitting outside, learned the importance of inflatable furniture that way back for the PS2 launch. The GBA SP will be brought along as a supply of junk food and what not. If possible a friend or two will also join me. Then it's just a matter of time. I'll probably only snag three games at most, more than likely just two.

Just shoot the shit with your friends. Also if one of your friends doesn't want the system, but he's there, and the store hands out vouchers to those in line to assure them a system, have your friend get a voucher, it'll sell well. That's how my first college room mate bought two games for himself to play on the PS2 that I bought.

Best? None of those titles seem particulary intersting (and let's ignore you put Tony Hawk up as a "drooling over" game). I have a feeling those saying this is an awesome launch lineup are REALLY caught up in the launch fever but like previously posted I would be interested to hear your take about a month later.

I'd also be willing to bet half of the titles people think are launch titles won't be there.

I think most xbox gamers will consider it the best launch [window] lineup, but only a few of the games interest me. The lineup is very much targetted towards the typical xbox player, in my opinion. I don't really see a need to distinguish between launch and launch window as its only a 6 week difference.

The thing I hate is standing in line. If you don't get there at least 3hours before hand, you won't get one(Whatever system is launching, or game for that matter) and you'll end up driving all over the state to find one(PSX).

When I do buy, I only purchase 2 games, nothing more. I had a bad habit of buying a bunch of games, and a bunch of those games sucked.

I will bend, if I KNOW that more then 2 games will rock, but that is rare.

Launch day anxiety? WTF is that? I had anxiety when I was waiting to find out if financing got approved for my new car.... why the hell would I have anxiety for something I'm just going to walk in to a store and buy?

Don't buy most of the launch titles, for sure.

Check them out A LOT online first before you think about buying them.

Or you'll end up with a bunch of shitty titles that you'll sell.

Simple. I just don't get excited. In fact, I haven't been excited for the launch of a new system since Dreamcast.

At first, I swore off buying Gamecube, PS2, and Xbox. Though, I eventually succombed to 2 of those.

New system launches just don't fill me with the child-like joy they used to.

I bought a Dreamcast at launch. I believe that's the only system i've bought at launch (besides GBA) and I only did it because of MvC.

Actually, I did get a GBA SP at launch (had one reserved)... Forgot 'bout that. If you count my fiance buying me a DS on launch day -- to put aside for my Christmas gift -- I guess that as well.

Who buys new cars? They're a terrible investment and depreciate so quickly. People say that the warranty makes it worth it, but that's not true--no one ever gets the depreciated value worth out of the warranties.

You could have saved so much money for games by buying a 2 year old used model.

How did the mods not notice this guy? What's he doing on GAF?

[DarienA, I am just kidding. Please don't take this personally at all.]

I didn't say I was drooling over Tony Hawk, I said I was drooling over the launch lineup, as a whole.

Also, no, I'm not buying them all... I didn't mean for it to be taken that way. I was just listing all the titles for launch that I thought were cool, and then saying I don't know how I'm going to pay for everything I want at launch (system, games, accesories, etc. - ie: 'all this' meaning the launch). Which will mean decision time for me (which games chose). Although I could see how what I said could be taken that way. I didn't say it clearly.

What the fuck? If you want to state your opinion, do so, just don't do it in reply to someone elses [my] opinion as if yours negates it; like you're opinion is the final definitive say in the matter.

I think if those games are there for launch, it will be my most anticipated launch of a console yet. I don't give a shit if you don't find them "particulary intersting" :lol You cannot rebutt my opinion with your opinion, as if it's fact. Make your own statements on your own.

Yes, because everything on a forum having to do with taste in games is stated as fact :lol Don't get your panties in a bunch.

I didn't get N64 system til' Nov. 1998 when I heard Zelda Ocarina of Time is coming out for that month. Then I got a NGC for christmas (DEC. 2003).

I guess I'm a party pooper! Always getting good stuff so late though. :D

I don't do launch day!! <~~~~~Boy, that line sounds cheesy doesn't it! :lol
