How is Superman Animated Series?

I always liked Batman TAS, but how was (or is) Superman TAS? And did they ever cross each other? I remember watching Batman&Superman on KidsWB, but I don't remember seeing them together.

It's very good. What Batman: TAS did for Batman on TV, it does for Superman.

They did a few crossover episodes after World's Finest came out (Batman/Superman Adventures), and Batman moved to Kids' WB. IIRC one episode had Superman donning Batman's costume and joining Robin after Bruce Wayne went missing. Another had them teaming up to take on Ra's Al Ghul. There's a Batgirl/Supergirl team-up episode too.

I only saw one or two episodes back in the day, but I eagerly picked up the first DVD volume and have been very pleased. The thing I most like is that as opposed to Batman there's actual continuity. It's not nearly as involved as the continuity in Justice League Unlimited, but it's there and it's fun to see some progression in Luthor's plans and in Superman's immersion into Metropolis.

Superman TAS, was very good IMO. I will always have Batman: TAS ahead of it, but Superman is very good. Superman probably has one my favorite animated fight scenes ever.
Darkseid v Superman in the last episode Legacy
. It also has one of the saddest moments
when Darkseid kills Dan Turpin, it was just so shocking at the time. The funeral sequence that followed nearly had me bawling like a baby. the episode was Apokalips NOW!!!
. The crossover with batman was very well done too. Great stuff.

I enjoyed the Batman/Superman movie also, with Joker/Luthor and Batman/Superman stepping all over each other's shoes. It was good stuff.

It's ok, it's not as good as Batman. Tim Daly's voice acting is in your face non threatening. It doesn't really do Superman justice.

It was a good series, and they did as much as they could with the character and concept but it doesn't even come close to some of the greater Batman TAS eps.

Watching through the Batman episodes, I've been surprised at the little bits of continuity in them. You'd never notice without watching them in order like they are on the DVDs, but episodes do make references to past ones and there is even some foreshadowing in some of them as well. But unlike the recent JLU, there's no overall story running with all the episodes.

There is as much if not more continuity throughout the Superman:TAS AND and over-arching story unlike Batman:TAS... this isn't to say it's a better show (it isn't IMHO, between the trimmed down art-style and their discomfort with the Superman franchise- it's on par with, arguably better than, Gotham Knights however, since Superman fit the style better. Gotham Knights lacked the sublety of the earlier B:TAS seasons).

Over-arching plots included Luthor, Supergirl, and especially *Darkseid*.

Continunity included Braniac, Bizarro, Lana Lang, Target/Solar Power, Metallo (actually EVERY supervillain pretty much makes multiple appearances that refer to their previous ones; vs Batman where they do reappear but don't reference their past appearances), that super-suit -> Steel, Hamilton, etc etc. Superman, on the whole, built at LOT more on the past than Batman:TAS because the episodes were more action heavy and the approach was more "serial action/adventure" than a series of "mini-movies" (again sign of their discomfort with the franchise and why the overall writing wasn't as strong/powerful as B:TAS).

One thing to note about Superman:TAS is that there were an inordinate amount of guest appearances, off the top of my head:

Flash
Steel
Supergirl
Legion of Superheroes
Aquaman
Green Lantern
Robin
Batman
Dr. Fate
Lobo

While it was a blast to watch, including guest appearances and supervillain origin stories, Superman himself wasn't as developed as a character as in Batman. In tone, however, it was much closer to JLU than Batman. Basically, Batman when the mini-movie approach. Superman started the serial approach w/ significant amounts of continunity. This carried over to Batman Beyond (roughly the same, if not better about continunity than Superman) which had far less guest appearances to worry about so it too developed Terry's character very well. Finally JLA/JLU, which largely follow the Superman formula.

I still love that episode where Superman encounters Darkseid and gets a lesson in how completely fucking unfair life is. XD

I never saw the second part of that, but hopefully those bitches didn't pull the requisite comic cop out.

I think none of those were in that ep.

That was an awesome episode. Now I'm getting nostalgic.

TToB: what episode was that?

The one where Darkseid uses his wacky Omega Beams (IIRC) to shoot around Superman and IIIIIIIIIICE some Kirby-esque mofo. Then Supes proceeds to flip the fuck out. Man, that was some good shit and hopefully that dude stayed dead. :D

He stayed dead. Darkseid's other violation of Supes was to destroy his reputation by turning him into his herald through brainwashing... the effects of that lasted even through the JLU.

Ahh, found pic of her. I always was a bit perturbed by Granny Goodness. I didn't know what a drag queen was but I knew she wasn't a SHE at all. It was weird.

Crap - If this comes out on DVD I'll have to buy it. Shit - I still don't have the Batman stuff yet, but I gots me some Season One Wonder Woooooomaaaaaaaaaan! All the world is waiting for YoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOu! And the powers of your breasts! :lol

Season 1 is out on DVD now; you can get it at Wal-Mart for, mmm, $21. :)

Man, now that I think about it, that was a crazy series finale.
Darkseid brainwashes Superman, and sends his new "son" to invade and conquer Earth. Superman comes to his senses just in time for he and Supergirl to get hit by a Kryptonite warhead courtesy of Luthor. Lois busts Superman and Supergirl out of prison before they're executed, and Supergirl is taken to STAR Labs for medical treatment. Superman's reputation is completely ruined, and no one but Lois trusts him anymore, so he goes to Apokalips to have it out with Darkseid. Darkseid BEATS THE SH*T out of him, but Superman clamps his hands over Darkseid's eyes before the Omega Beams can be unleashed, and the backlash blows Darkseid's palace apart. Superman and Darkseid stumble out of the rubble, and Darkseid collapses at Superman's feet. Superman carries Darkseid over to the cliff and tosses him down to the people below, encouraging them to dispense some mob justice on their fallen dictator.

So what happens then? What happens then?

They walk over to Darkseid, gingerly pick their injured lord up, and carry him off for medical treatment! He's still their lord and master! Darkseid even throws it in Superman's face before motioning for his subjects to continue. Supergirl shows up to bring a dejected Superman home, and it's over.

How f*cking depressing was that? No sappy, happy endings here! :lol

Hahah yeah, I loved that ep. The first cliffhanger where they have superman all tied up and half the city in ruins was very well done.

Heh, got that on DVD for cheap...the first meeting between Bats and Supes is hilarious, not to mention the catfights between Harley and Mercy.

Cafeman: It's the episode called "New Kids in Town."

EDIT: 53 or 54 episodes, I think.

Probably my favorite two episodes in the series, and the only time in a network cartoon in some time that i actually felt the scale of an invasion and utter futility of hero's efforts. The final two scenes are my favorite in the series, and i actually got tearyeyed at the end.
