How likely (or unlikely) is it that some PS3 specs will be trimmed by launch date?

I'm not talking core hardware, but peripherals here. There seems to be a lot of redundancy there to me. For instance: up to seven blue-tooth controllers, plus six usb ports? That seems like the most obvious to me. I think the internal hub is OK, but if it's dumb like I expect, I'm not sure I'd want all those packets bumping into each other with multiple devices connected. I'm not sure I understand the need for two DVI ports either- it would seem one is sufficient.

Anyway, maybe my thinking is too limited here, but thats why I'd like your thoughts.

How does this blue tooth technology work? It’s probably an infrared/wireless chip that can support up to seven controllers!? But the actually system doesn't have seven controller ports!?

Right?

Right, I understand that part. But why the need for 7 BT ports + 6 usb ports? I think (one of) the stated purpose of the usb ports is for wired controllers- which is cool, but it seems three or four is more than adequate.

bluetooth allows 8 devices on one net

therefore the PS3 + 7 controllers. so the 7 controllers come as part of the bt implementation.

lots of the readers etc usb ports don't really cost that much

I agree, six USB ports is just an overkill.

interesting.

I see them trimming some of the features...but nothing big, i can see maybe 4 USB, maybe support only Memory Sticks...something small...not enough to change the price much, with that said, why change...

I don't see why 6 USB ports is overkill. 4 ports on the front mainly used to charge the controllers, 2 ports on the back for add-ons such as the eye-toy camera.

OK, that makes sense, but how often would one being using all 4 controllers at the same time, thus needing recharging. I mean it's a nice option, but from a cost perspective, even at pennies per port, incrementally that can add up to a lot of dinero for Sony over let's say 100 million consoles.

You could be using them for other things as well...steering wheel, keyboard, digital camera, PSP, etc.

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth

Well that could depend on how likely it is they'll get a really great multiplayer game, but I don't think it's an unlikely scenario at all.

It definitely has some costly features, but I think some of the ones you've mentioned are so far down the line that it really wouldn't make a whole lot of sense to include some of the higher end features if they're worrying about saving pennies on the ports.

If they wanted a cheap system, there is a lot more they should change before getting down to trivial stuff like trimming a port or 2.

I mean it's not like the Nintendo cutting out memory card slots on the GC, where they went through the entire design process with that mindset (and seemingly have done the same with the Revolution). Sony knew going in that they wanted this to be a huge project, they're positioning it to take on some pretty high end electronics devices, and they've devoted billions to make sure it is.
