Two years ago my sister won a goldfish in a bag at a carnival and she put it in my room. I came home from school for winter break and saw it in the little shitty bowl that she put it in and I gave it a bigger bowl and some plants and stuff. I didn't think the fish would make it very long....usually goldfish die like the week you get them.

But this goldfish has been ticking along for 2 years...which is kind of awesome. I change its water every week and just feed it regular fish food.

i had numerous goldfish that lived 8 years, they lived outside in a massive plant pot that we did up nice with gravel and oxygenated weeds.

me too. What's the coolest yet cheap and easiest to care for fish you can get? although i've heard goldfish are actually pretty smart...

I'd say that 5-8 years is normal if you take care of it. I mean, heck. A few feeder fish my red ear slider didn't eat grew up pretty large, and eventually went on to live for about five years. FEEDER FISH. :lol

Memory

Research by the School of Psychology at the University of Plymouth in 2003 demonstrated that goldfish have a memory-span of at least three months and can distinguish between different shapes, colors and sounds. They were trained to push a lever to earn a food reward; when the lever was fixed to work only for an hour a day, the fish soon learned to activate it at the correct time. The Mythbusters tested the myth that goldfish only had a memory span of 3 seconds. The Mythbusters were also able to prove that goldfish had a longer memory span than commonly believed. This was done by making goldfish go through a maze over a period of time. It was evident that they were able to remember the way and that they therefore had a memory span of over three seconds.[16]

Not enough information, do you have a cat? Are you hungry? Are you planning to boil its water at least once a day? Chlorination? TOO MANY VARIABLES TO SAY.

my goldfish always lived about 6 month to 1 yr. I think I over populated my tank when I was a kid that's why they didn't live longer.

A goldfish from a friend of mine lived 18 years, before he was eaten by the cat.

Mine always jumped out of the bowl right into the sink. It was a cruel world.

had one for 10 years now, he's in a bowl in mom's bathroom.

When he starts floating upside down, looking like he's dead, mom remembers she should change his water and he's back on track.
He must be 4kg's by now, that thing is HUGE.

Cats don't bother him much, they just drink his water : |

When we put a pond in the back yard, we went to the local pet store and bought a few ten-cent gold fish to prime the water (better to lose a few of those, then risk putting koi in before we're ready).

The fish grew...and are still in there. We ended up only being able to get 3 koi because of lack of space, and the goldfish are now 6-8" long. They're increadibly hearty, and will survive most anything happening to the pond (algae blooms, dog using it as a bath, etc). We'd lose them to raccoons, if it weren't for our dog.

That's neat. Yeah I thought goldfish only live for like 1 year or so. You must have a special goldfish! post some pics of your special goldfish and your sister.
