I guess back from Windows 95 days, I always had this weird habit of closing programs.

That changed when I switched to Mac OS X as my primary OS. But I still closed applications at the over five mark.

It really changed when I got a SSD and having many programs open without much issues. Plus RAM upgrades.

But whenever I Alt-Tab, seeing all those icons still drives me crazy, even though performance isn't affected.

Right now I have open:

  1. iMessage
  2. Calendar
  3. iTunes
  4. Spotify
  5. A todo list app
  6. Word
  7. A Twitter client. I hate the site itself, but clients are better.
  8. Text Edit--The Mac's Notepad
  9. An RSS Reader
  10. The Mac App Store
  11. Another standalone writing program
  12. Kindle
  13. Apple Mail
  14. Safari (3 tabs)

On my MacBook Pro:
  • Slack
  • Chrome (six tabs open)
  • Excel
  • Two instances of the dev environment I use at work
  • TextMate

Multitasking is one the things I like best about using OSX. I have no use Apple's main applications like Safari, Mail, Calendar, etc., but Mission Control with trackpad gestures is fantastic. I have two external monitors hooked up, with two desktops for each of those and three for my main display. I'm usually running a Windows 10 VM, too, and this thing never skips a beat.

At work:

Firefox
Remote Desktop Connection

I use web interfaces for like 90% of my job, and remote into machines that do not have one.

My laptop is a mess. Also keep getting notifications to restart it (which I haven't done in over a month) so Windows can update. Should be looking for a new one but this one has to do for another year.

Never more than one or two things open at a time for me. At most I might have iTunes for music, a browser for browsing, and my work stuff open at once.

• 3 browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Edge)
• Email client (Thunderbird)
• Music (Spotify)
• Podcast (VLC)
• Password manager (Keepass)
• IM client (Pidgin)

In the system tray there are a handful of other apps that are on auto-start.
