Neither of these are required and just hike up the price for the Sony.

1 spe already locked for this. who can calculate how much else needs to be in reserve?
Kiriku said:I was thinking about more of a picture-in-picture function in games myself...now I haven't played 360 too much, but from my understanding it kind of has a PiP function (since you can bring up a screen on top of the game with various settings anytime with the press of a button).
So how about, say, being able to have a small window for other stuff in the top right corner while playing a game? Maybe to see your opponent, or perhaps as an additional view/optional information window (which is somewhat common in PC games for example) in various games? I think that would be cool, as long as it's optional. Like if you're playing an RPG, you could choose to have detailed stats on-screen while running around on the field.

the arcade joysticks repersent fighting games the way japanese arcades are setup.
gofreak said:You don't think a SPE would be enough for this?
I've no doubt ram will be reserved, and probably a small portion of PPE time, but computationally, a SPE is arguably even too much for this kind of stuff.
firefoxsux said:1 spe is too much. reserved ram wasted. Ps3 don have excess of them.![]()
firefoxsux said:you take more physics or a video chat embedded in your game? i like both but the conditions of Ps3 force me to take 1.
firefoxsux said:can average gamers really find a use for them? even i morethan average gamer, cant think why they are there?
gofreak said:It's not exactly uncommon though..
Well, "less physics" relative to itself only, perhaps.
In many ways I totally agree with you, but I'm kind of resigned to it.
I can think of a few uses for the switch. For system link-ups, connecting eyetoy2 (if it's an IP camera), and as I mentioned earlier, connecting other devices that might like to share its wireless access (like a 360). USBs should be relatively obvious, but yeah, there is an abundance of them.
firefoxsux said:ps3 is a year lttp. if no upgade in specs, wasting powers on functionality when two systems are close in resource...no.
firefoxsux said:sony can sell you powerful "non-gaming" functionality. but gamers do they care? will the OS become a bottleneck? i am scared.
firefoxsux said:IP Eyetoy? why not by Usb or wifi?
firefoxsux said:btw connect 360 to Ps3, you must on both... very unwise. i bet 360 wifi is not $100 when Ps3 is on sales.

gofreak said:They're not close in CPU resource (well, IMO). And you do know 360 reserves CPU time and RAM for the OS too..?
The OS will have very clear boundaries, I think, beyond which it won't tread.
An IP camera lets you connect directly to a network without a computer needing to be in the way, hence it doesn't use USB. At least that's my understanding.
Local system link IMO isn't to be sniffed at despite online. Me and my mates do it a lot, with Halo2.
My guess is PS3 is going to have a "sleep mode" that will let it be used passively in many ways. Not just for acting as a switch for other active devices, but also for communicating with remote PSPs etc.
firefoxsux said:yes. Cell is good. but the Ps3 system whole is very close. will 512mb ram be a bottleneck in reserves?
Sony NG functions seems greater than their specs vis a vis to 360. im scard of the effects to games. "always on" OS kills resource like Windows. yucks.
I cannot take that lightly thats all.
Is there a dev in here to calm my fears of Ps3 NG OS is of the same track as 360?
