How much is bad travel time?

Just wondering what GAF thinks. I'm thinking about moving away for university because of time. Although everyone i know says that i shouldnt since i live so close? 4 hours a day of travel is alot IMO. But maybe its just me? The only solution i get offered is to wake up earlier. I just think this is the limit however and anything over this is too much.

Rush hours takes me 2 hours for university alone. Otherwise its 1:40 sometimes at best. I am bothered about not having time for other stuff. approaching 4 hours average a day just for uni travel(not counting travel for activites, shopping, lunch etc.) drains my brain and takes alot of time away. Especially on 5 day weeks.

Deg, IMHO your friends that say you should commute are being unrealistic, or they have no experience with excessive driving, or both. Currently I work two jobs, one being four days a week and two hours away (not including rush hour to and from new york, that's off hours) the other being *any day I don't go the the first job*

The terms of employment I negotiated with my employer stipulate a 10 hour work day any time I want one (basically so that I get maximum income for the drive) but believe me its draining.

I LOVE driving, and happily will drive around for hours, but back and forth to work, it gets extremely tiring very quickly. With college and the work that would add in both at school and at home, you do NOT want to entertain that idea.

Not only that, but the cost of gasoline, and wear and tear to your car rack up quickly. Expect to do an oil change about monthly. Gas every two trips minimum. etc...

Figure, if you're taking ten class hours, you will have 30 - 40 hours a week that should be spent on homework. Add in 20 hours / week lost to the road.

my 2cp.

4 hours? That's insane. If you take a bus or something you could use the time to do homework or something.

I do. Cant really write much however. Good way to revise. I use train and bus. My main problem is that it takes away too much time for other things. There's only so much i can read. Most of the work is very varied. From presentations to reports. Those i need pc's for.

What i hate is that i have two intense days, two 1 hour days and one 1 hour day. I spend more time travelling than i am there on those 3 days...

My commute to work is about 2 hours on a bad day at the moment (an absolute minimum of 1:30). I did similar length journeys for a few years for school as well. It's survivable, but not fun.

But more importantly, move away from home. Any excuse is good, and university particularly so. Develop that independence - I just can't imagine having lived at home while attending university. It just seems wrong.

Yeah i agree. I'll be more involved hopefully, although its very late now. Its been 3 months and i feel pretty lonely so far. You cant get involved if you dont live there. Not enjoying university at all so far. Feels like college part 2. I like the course however and am doing well so far but its starting to get to me.
