How problematic was PS2 launch hardware?

My friend's launch PS2 died in early 2004. My Xbox died last year. Xbox 360, Gamecube (December 2001), and PStwo (August 2005 bought), are working fine.

Fuck man i just started to read your post like "my friend died..."

(gotta go to bed i guess)

My launch PS2 laser-burned copies of Tekken Tag Tournament and Final Fantasy IX right out of the box... and then performed flawlessly for the next three years. It stopped reading CDs a couple years ago, but DVDs still run fine.

Just trying to get an idea on how problematic (or not) PS2 hardware was when it launched.
This question should be directed to the japanese launch. It launch in the states months later and fix many problems. .. rightfully so

My launch PS2 still plays everything fine. It's gotten insane amounts of use as well since I use it for PS1 and PS2 games, and DVD playback since I don't have a standalone DVD player. I did have to get it repaired a couple of years ago because it was getting DREs, but the repair was free. I believe Sony replaced the drive laser in it with one of the newer versions that's less prone to errors.
