Hurricane Rita is now a CAT 2 storm...

Was watching the news. Current track says Matagorda which puts Houston/Galveston like on the east side of the storm, which is the worst side. Probably early Friday AM.

Still a little early though.

I am in the NW part of Harris county (Katy).

People are probably paying more attention and taking this more seriously because of the Katrina disaster, but for once reactionary sensationalism is probably good because people often don't take hurricanes seriously enough.

Damnit, when did Mother Nature become such a bitch? She used to play nice.

An Earth Messiah told us this was coming... but we shunned him!

Well if you want to drag out an old theory some scientists are claiming it's because of global warming.

Yeah, but its always been my understanding that the climate of the Sahara in winter will dictate the intensity of the hurricane season in the gulf. Something like that.

Edit: http://science.howstuffworks.com/question216.htm

I guess the warmer waters in the Atlantic'll mean they get stronger en route, while the Sahara dicatates how many there will be in a given season.

I predict Rita will reach Cat-3 status in the gulf, and hit Texas or LA as a Cat-2 causing some damage but making the flooding in New Orleans worse again :(

Posted this in the other thread, but CNN posted that the storm will reach Cat 4 strength by 2pm tomorrow, most likely heading towards Texas. Damn that warm water in the gulf!
