I’m replaying the Baldur’s Gate saga AGAIN

It popped up on gamepass so I decided to do my 978th run through the games/dlc. Still the best rpg saga out there, I've played it on every platform there is and never tire of it.

I know a lot of people replay favorites, but I find they are usually short games. An annual Super Metroid or SotN run will only take a seasoned veteran 4 or 5 hours.
A BG saga run takes like 50 plus, even when you know the games back and front.
Anybody else replay long-ass games from the past on the regular?

Yeah, I played FF 7, 9,12 (all about three times i think), FF tactic (i forgot how much, more than three i think) sometimes replay older MH (whatever i like) with new characters (this also Torchlight 2 and Titan Quest), Dragon Dogma Dark Arisen as well.

Not for so long game, usually open world in older era, such as FC 2 and 3, usually took longer than usual, because I like exploring things.
I dont recall other long game i usually replay.

i do however, replaying metroid (any metroid) or castlevania or 2D zelda, at least once per year.

How are the controls on a console? I played them when they came out 20+ years ago on the PC. Mouse and keyboard seemed to be integral.

I remember them vividly despite the 20 years passing. Go for the eyes Boo!

I have to gather my party before venturing forth... Not sure about that with a game pad.

As a pc original title designed around a m+k, the controller option definitely takes a bit of adjustment.
It will never be as good as a mouse, but it is perfectly serviceable.
The pathfinding is still as bad as you remember though!

Icewind Dale was terrific. Tough as nails combat and very atmospheric.

And then Planescape Torment had one of the best stories ever.

Maybe they will come out on the Switch 2 and we can use the new Switch mouse controls on them.

Note that PC has a ton of mods for BG1&2 plus expansions (the "new 1.5 game kind of sucks).

BG3 is amazing. I've been lured into replays a couple of times now.

Dark Arisen is another one that I play through every couple of years. Xenogears, Xenosaga 3, Xenoblade 1, FF4/FF6/FF7/FF8/FF12, Chrono Trigger, and Vagrant Story are also on my regular long play replay list.

It's been almost two decades since I played the pc originals, what sucks about the remasters? In my mind they are pretty identical. I know some folks don't like the additional party members Beamdog added, but you can just not use them.
And I kinda like Dorn, he's a great evil party tank.

There is nothing wrong about the remasters. The new characters added to the base game might not be written as good as the originals. But Siege of Dragonspear (the recent BG1 expansion made by Beamdog) is way better than Throne of Bhall (BG2 expansion).

Siege of Dragonspear was criticized because there is a trans character. This character is completely irrelevant to the overall story and has only a minor role in the expansion itself. The expansion acts as a good pace breaker between BG1 and BG2. It's linear, sweet and not too long compared to the main games. I remember it looking pretty good too! I think it links BG1 and BG2 pretty well without going overboard.

Throne of Bhall is a big mess, terrible story and awful combat balance. I was really disappointed by it, but I had to finish it since it's the conclusion of the saga. It was weird playing that after the masterpiece that is BG2.

The remasters are fine, easier to use vs OG. The Beamdog 1.5 made game that sits between BG1 and 2 sucks due to inferior characters and story, IMO.

There was a trans character in Siege? lol, I just got through that and started BG2 today, I didn't even notice them in there. Which character was it?
I just picked up Hexxat to do her quest, I'd forgotten about her. Her mechanics are kinda wonky, but having a vampire thief is cool.
Probably end up with Edwin, Viconia, Hexxat, Dorn and Minsc. Might trade out Minsc for a dedicated archer.

Baldurs... Gate you say? hmm... Never heard of it.

All the time. Replayed Baldur's Gate games the year BG III came (and Icewind Dale actually, because after BG I wanted more Infinity Engine!). Like to replay Elder Scrolls, Final Fantasy, whatever it is as the mood strikes. Nothing like the classics.

You guys really should try Tyranny.

It's extremely under rated. One of the better Infinity Engine throwbacks released in recent times. Very interesting world, well written story and characters. The only downside is combat could do with some rebalancing and is a little on the easy side, but overall a very good game at that price.

Long have I sung the praises of Tyranny, the last good thing Obsidian released. And it was good, REALLY good, the world building, setting, and writing were all top notch.
Comparing it to their current output makes me want to weep. The studio is pretty much dead to me.

agree with extremely underrated, this game theme is unusual for wrpg, the art also on the cool side.

I never could get into it... I've come to realize that the transition from classic turn-based design (like the perfection of Pool of Radiance) over to realtime click-to-attack era of RPGs (Baldur's Gate 1) is where the genre left my interest behind. There's something about clicking to attack that I just can't stand, same reason I hate MMO style games. I re-tried BG1 not long ago and was infuriated two hours in, dropped it once again.

It's too bad because I'm a huge fan of AD&D 1st and 2nd edition rules, but this translation into realtime doesn't feel like those rules at anymore. I need the classic Gold Box interpretation of it, that actually feels like tabletop.

great
i'm replaying FFTactics atm, first time PSP version (emulated)
completed a couple of times on PS1, i like to play it with minimum grind, searching for the least exp level required to beat each battle;

ie i'm trying to beat the lv.55-60 3 consecutive final battles with an average lv.40 platoon

Honestly I didn't remember so I had to look it up. Apparently the character is Mizhena.

One of my favourite cRPGs ever. The combat and builds might be simplified compared to the other big cRPGs but the reactivity in the story is incredible. It's such an interesting game.

I played the first little bit of it and dropped it, though I've always intended to go back. I wasn't expecting it to be that heavy on exposition. Just wasn't in the mood for it at the time, I guess. That said, I've always loved how that game looks.

I am really pissed that the IP is rotting in Paradox' dungeons. And that Obsidian never got a shot at making a second RPG like this. I just love the premise of controlling a guy who serves a "bad" guy (or girl, I think it is never made clear if Kyros is a man or woman).

well whatever Chris Avellone is working on at that new company is our next hope for a good cRPG.

At least until Larian reveals whatever it is working on next. I have seen faint whisperings of them working on a post apocalyptic game, one can dream they are true.

Larian games are strong in a lot of aspects but writing isn't one of them. I'm curious to see what Avellone can do once freed from this sadly dead company that is Obsidian.
