*sigh*

Using Windows XP. One day it just stops connecting to the internet via dial-up. It'll dial, but won't finalize the connection. When plugged into the LAN, it's incapable of resolving and IP address, can't connect to the router, etc...when there's nothing physically wrong with the router, cable etc, it's obviously something in the software.

I just can't find what, and reformatting/reinstall really isn't a question. Already did a repair reinstall of Win XP, the issue still remains.

Help, please.

I had spyware that did that to me once. I was away for a month until my brother fished around in the registry. Sometimes resetting your modem/router helps. Hope it doesn't turn out to be too critical.

if you have the registry state saver thing enable (i can't remember what it's called - windows something something) you could try reverting to the latest date you can remember it working. otherwise, who knows, xp is a serpentine clusterfuck (sorry drinky!); reinstalling is the only for sure solution.

I dunno, but it could be hardware.

Last week I went to a LAN party. Came back, and I couldn't get a connection. Turned out that BOTH my modem and integrated network were dead. I still don't understand why that happened, especially since the modem never went anywhere.

I know what it might be then. Let me guess, using SP2? It's an SP2 bug. There are a few fixes for it but they never worked for me. One day it just all of a sudden decided to work.

Go to google.com and type in "limited or no connectivity". You might find a fix that may help.

could always try entirely removing your network protocols then network card and starting again. Maybe TCP/IP is poked?

Here's something: the computer didn't even have TCP/IP protocols installed. Working fine over ethernet now, about to test the dial up..but seriously, how the hell does that happen.

Arrrgh. Ethernet on that comp is moving at sub-56k speeds, while everything else connected to the network is fine. I'm just trying to get all the Windows Updates downloaded :(

Alright, that's it, I'm done.

I'll reinstall IE and TCP/IP. It'll work on ethernet.

So I'll go to Windows Update.

Then it'll download something and ask to restart. After the restart, the problems are back.

This isn't my computer, I can't format/install without contacting the owner (so as to know what I need to back up) and it's far too late for that. Too busy with schoolwork tomorrow, and after that, I've got to get back down to school for Tuesday's day of tests. Argh fuck.

I've been trying to get a stable install of XP Pro for three goddamned weeks. It keeps dropping System files, (with no retry option) and I've tried loading it from three different optical drives, onto three different HDDs, AND it's a new disc.
I'm trying manual install of some of the missing stuff right now, but with only some success so far. I'm thinking of writing it off as a waste of $130 and going with a pirated copy of 2000. I've set up scores of PCs and Macs over the years, but I'm just at a loss.
God, I miss FFXI...
