Item : 32GB Ipod Touch
Age : 3+ years
Cost : £329.99
How : Left it in my jean pocket and it went through a wash, bubbles all underneath the screen with no power.

GAF : What prized possessions have you broken?

FORMAT

Item : Description
Age : How long you've owned it
Cost : At time of purchase
How : Accident or otherwise

This was last week as opposed to just now.

Item: Dell Studio 1737
Age: ~2 years
Cost: ~$1600
How: First the Bluetooth failed, then the WiFi stopped working and finally the touchpad would intermittently stop recognising the presence of a finger tip. That was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. So I hurled it down toward the floor. Bought a replacement 15.6" HP the next day.

Item: Jeep Cherokee...
Age: 4 years old, bought new...
Cost: Honestly, don't recall, anyone know what a Cherokee 4.0 went for new?
How: ..fell asleep while driving...

also, friend's neck....
Age: 16
Cost: ....
How: see above

guess that wasn't too recent, but by far the most expensive thing I've broken

That always feels good - the annoyances building up over time until that point at which you just don't care any more and you're willing to forgo some decent expenditure just to live in the final, no-return, ceremonial orgy of destruction.

I guess that's why some people kill their spouses - but I'm only violent towards inanimate objects.

Reminds me of the time my line trimmer fucked up; failing to feed the line just that one time too many on a particularly hot day. My neighbours were watching in horror/awe/amusement/disgust as I spun around and around and let it fly like a hammer toss. It felt so good as I watched it hit the road, the fuel tank flying off, the two stroke fuel glittering in the sun like amber arterial blood spraying from the neck of a dying man.

Pity that doesn't qualify for for this thread, as it was only a Ryobi POS. I bought a Husqvarna the next weekend.

Ok, you win.

It's can be recent.

Why didn't you bring it back if it was faulty?

It was well out of warranty (didn't think to extend it beyond the default 1 year) and the moment the laptop hit the ground it was beyond repair.

In hindsight it wasn't a particularly smart move as if I looked hard enough I could've found replacement boards for the WiFi and BT, and probably done something about the touchpad. On the other side of the coin, the 15.6" replacement I bought is better-suited for Uni than its larger predecessor.

Haha, precisely.

Every time I begin entertaining the idea of having my eyes done...

Does damaging count?

Item : Samsung Galaxy SII
Age : 2 weeks
Cost : Free, came with a two year plan which will cost me €850,-
How : During a break I decided to lie down on a bench outside get some sun, it fell out of my pocket, dropped barely half a meter. Results was a that a piece of the side had somehow chipped away. Still feel like crying over it.

I dropped my OG Galaxy S on concrete probably three or four times - just got some small scratches in it. Sorry for your pain.

This is why I don't care for long plans - chances are you'll end up with an unusable POS at the end of it.

Item: iPod Touch
Age: I'd had it for about a year
Cost: I dunno. About $160 AU.
How: I was asleep on the beach listening to Melvyn Bragg argue about Schopenhauer and the tide came in.

Well, everything expensive breaks after a couple of years, but not because of my fault.
Just crappy electronics. Monitors, laptops, pc's, cameras, cars, etc.

Of my own fault: can't think of anything.

Item : Nintendo Wii
Age : Two years
Cost : $250
How : doesn't count I think cause I didn't break it but it was hilarious, idiot me used to keep my xbox 360 high on a shelf. my cousins came over, we played and then one went to get a drink and he tripped over the ethernet wire and somehow it was enough to push the 360 off the shelf and on top of the wii on the floor. Quite a thing to see, hilarious yet jtcnkgvbjhg >:(, but nintendo fixed it for free :D

As for me, don't think I've broken any expensive hardware, just replace old ones.
Huh I'll need to think

Sorry, but I laughed out load.

I jumped right up, which of course meant that all my shit went everywhere. A guy walking past asked if he could help and I told him to fuck off. Which was very poor form, but I was in a state.

What a timely thread...

Item : Super Street Fighter IV (XBOX 360) Disc
Age : 1 year 3 months
Cost : $39.99
How : Snapped it. Not in a rage either, just...felt like it.

I may get it replaced if I find it super cheap, but im in no rush at all.

Item : MacBook
Age : 2 years
Cost : About €1099
How : Travelled with it a lot, never turned it off (always sleep). Hard drive was broken I guess, or the fan, shut itself down more and more. Anyhow, when I/my cat accidentally lit it on fire, it never woke up again.

Not mine but a story from work.

(Context: I work in Insurance and when lodging a claim for a mobile phone we need certain bits of information about it, including the serial number which you can usually get off the phone by removing the back cover...)

Item : iPhone4 32GB
Age : 2 months
Cost : $1003
How : "I needed the serial number, and someone told me to remove the back cover so I did."

He posted details in this thread.

i've posted this in full detail on gaf before but for now this will do.

had prk done at the gimbel eye center in edmonton on Oct. 12, 2008. my eyes were perfect candidates for either surgery.... long story short worst decision of my life. i can see better than 20/20 but the quality of my vision is horrible. i suffer from glare, halos, starburts, ghosting, horrible dry eyes, floaters and more. the surgery has destroyed my life. im going back to talk to the surgeon about a touch up to try and fix things at the end of the month but with my current dry eyes and pain im not sure if it's even worth it.

you need to keep in mind that there are side effects you cant avoid at all. your eyes will come out dryer, you will lose some contrast(colors look slightly washed out, harder to pick out details in low light), HOA will increase and your super close up fine vision will be slightly fuzzy.

i did not cheap out on my surgery, gimbel here is one of the best in canada. the marketing behind laser eye surgery is misleading and wrong. theres a reason why some of the surgeons during the FDA trials are trying to band the surgery now.

according to recent findings you only have about a 65% chance of ending up getting vision that doesnt suffer from any visual quality problems. why would you risk great vision just for the option of not using glasses anymore. if you can see well with glasses or contacts getting laser eye surgery is a dumb move.

EDIT: if anyone asks questions i'll try to answer them late tonight after work.

Item : iPhone Touch 16GB (First Gen)
Age : 4 years
Cost : Can't remember... about £250?
How : It slid off the arm of the sofa 3 days ago and there are 3 big cracks across the screen. It still works, but I'm going to upgrade now. Coupled with a unresponsive home button, it's too frustrating to use.

The battery in my Casio watch died. Not expensive in monentary terms, but if I keep instinctively checking my wrist for the time like this and failing, it's going to cost me dearly in psychiatric care later.

This reminds me of a friend of mine. He broke his PS2 slim by leaving it running and on the floor in the presence of a fat & lazy cat that loved warm things. As far as he can tell, the cat sat on it and blocked the vents until it overheated. (I'm just glad nothing happened to the cat, it's an awesome cat.)

I was going to play, but not anymore.

Actually, I haven't broken anything expensive. You guys need to be more careful.

Happened a couple days ago...

Item: Lenovo laptop
Age: ~22-23 months
Cost: Around $500
How: 4 year old brother was playing something on it and spilled some of his chocolate milk on the keyboard. Completely shorted it out and made it useless. A couple weeks ago he also dropped it a few feet which made the video cable randomly cut out if you held it at a certain angle.

...But I just replace the keyboard and apparently when I put all the screws back in, the video cable was readjusted and now that's fixed too apparently. Only took a $25 part and half an hour of fidgeting to fix it so I'm happy.

IPhone 3GS, I had it on the armrest of the lounge looking up Borgia flag locations in assassins creed brotherhood, knocked it off onto the floor, all of 2 feet and it's crack the screen, still works though. I'm actually typing this post from it now, but I need to get it fixed, $70 it will cost, and then I can upgrade to a new handset in September anyway

I'll probably end up getting a samsung galaxy s 2

Item : iPod Touch 16GB 1. generation
Age : Approx 2 years
Cost : No idea. From Danish kroners to USD: around 350 dollars (yep)
How : Someday it just stopped responding. Couldn't format it or anything. Was crushed and deeply annoyed. Sometimes I still whip it out to try to wake it up without result.

Item : Dell Latitude D610
Age : 6+ years
Cost : Free
How : I was drunk and somehow cracked the LCD screen. I don't remember anything until after the actual breakage. I think I may have smashed it against the desk.

Was overdue for a new laptop anyway.

32 GB iPod touch (3rd generation)
age: 1.5 years
cost: $300ish
how: it was rainy incredibly hard one day and it was in my shorts pocket and i had no umbrella. got drenched.

it has since been replaced with a 64GB 4th gen one.

Item : 4GB Flash Drive
Age : 3 years
Cost : $15-$20, not 100% sure
How : Ended up corrupting the drive and was unable to reformat it. Now the USB drive thinks that it's a floppy drive =|.

Item : Classic Ipod 80GB
Age : About a year
Cost : 250 €
How : Dropped it in the toilet, pulled it back out, but being grossed over by it threw it in the sink while letting water run over it, i thought it was wet already but with piss, might as well be wet with water.

It broke.

Item : PSP-2000
Age : 2 yrs
Cost : $175
How : Had the audacity to carry a portable gaming machine around in my pocket for a bit. Got home, underlying lcd screen had a huge pressure crack in it. I don't recall bumping it into anything.

Item: Ipod Touch: 32 gb
Age: Probably about a year at the time.
Cost: $250 I think?
How: Had it in the pocket of my hooded sweatshirt while running back from dropping garbage off at the curb. The Ipod spiraled out of the pocket to land face down on the concrete driveway. Screen now has a nice big long crack in it. It still works perfectly fine though. So I still use it. I'll probably replace it the next time a new model gets announced.

Item: Custom Contact Lenses
Age: 8 months
Cost: $250
How: left one of them without enough liquid overnight, now they have a crack on it :((

I want to cry

Item : Halo 3 edition Xbox 360 Wireless Headset
Age : 4 years
Cost : $49?
How : The thing wouldn't hold a charge anymore and it kept dying on me so I just snapped it in two.

Just cracked the front glass on my iPhone 4.

Item : iPhone 4 16 gb black
Age : 13 months
Cost : $200 w/ 2 year AT&T contract
How : Dropped it twice in a week span on my concrete patio from a height of 2 feet (slipped out of my pocket while sitting in a lounge chair. Both times it landed on the front glass. No case. =(
