I just won a Sega Master System!

djtiesto

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
I was surfing on ebay out of sheer boredom and won a pretty nice deal on a Master System. The following games are included:

After Burner
R Type
Shinobi
Great Football
Altered beast
Rastan
Thunder Blade
Choplifter

Total came to $39 plus s/h... not sure if that's a good or bad deal. System plus games are all in mint condition, system even has its box (although it's a bit banged up).

I already have one game for it that I bought a while ago - though you could probably guess which one already =P I was totally a NES child growing up and only got to play the SMS over a friend's house a couple of times, so I'm pretty oblivious as to what else is out there. For me the SMS began and ended with Phantasy Star. But if you can post any recommendations, that'd be awesome. I'm looking into Golvellius, Alex Kidd the Lost Stars, and of course the Ys 1 port.

Aaaaa, I love me my Sega Master System, only problem is both of mine stopped working. I don't know what the problem is!

Anyway, California Games is my favorite game for the system, and I do love the Ghostbusters game.

that's one hell of a DEAL!

I recommend:

Zillion
Secret Commando
Ghost House
Enduro Racer
Longbow
Ys the Vanished Omens
Wonderboy in Monsterworld
Fantasy Zone

Master System was awsome :D

I have barely played any Sega at all over the years, but Golvellius always looked awesome (Zelda clone, I think).

Don't forget the obligatory lttp thread when it arrives. ;)

I got the 3D Glasses with adaptor, Missile Defense 3-D and the Light Phaser last year off ebay. I had traded these items (stupidly) back in 1991.

I helped a friend of mine move a few years ago.... and we found a box of his from back in the day with a Master System and a bunch of games. He GAVE it to me. Good stuff, I love it. Wonderboy ftw.

Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap unless you have Dragon's Curse for the Turbo.

Also, Spellcaster is an interesting RPG/adventure/side-scrolling action hybrid.

Kenseiden is a Castlevania-ish game with sluggish controls.

Avoid Lord of the Sword and Miracle Warriors if you're looking for more RPGs. Miracle Warriors might be passable if you're looking for an old-school RPG romp (old school as in Western 8-bit home computer RPG style), but Lord of the Sword is just plain bad. Ultima IV got a UK cart release. Plays exactly like home computer versions, but the graphics are more colorful and the sound is better.

Why do you want Ys? Seriously, if you have the Turbo version...sorry, I don't get the modern-day love for Ys, it was clunky back then and even worse now :)

Man I miss my SMS. The power button got stuck and I accidentally broke it trying to pop it back out.

Get:

Aztec Adventure
Kung Fu Kid
Alex Kidd & The Lost Stars

Did you get your namesake for the system, too? :lol

The Master System rocked. Few things were cooler then playing those games on my Game Gear with the Master Gear accessory. Which reminds me...I need to buy another Game Gear.

Anyway, I'd recommend grabbing Alien Syndrome, Great Baseball, Reggie Jackson Baseball (or American Baseball as it was known internationally), and OutRun (just to play the first competent home version...the computer versions of that era were drek).

Oh yeah...hope the Master System you got has Maze Game built in. Still one of the coolest giveaway games of all time.

you gotta get:

Rambo ( it might be rambo 2? i dunno)
Zillion
Fantasy Zone
Fantasy Zone 2: The Maze (its like pacman ...but with guns)
Penguin Land
Alex Kid Miricle World

id have to break out my box of master system games to recomend anything else :P

I reccomend picking up a Genesis controller if you dont have one. SMS controllers are it's kryptonite, the D-Pad is horrible and with age even more so.

Space Harrier is one of the best games for the system. You need to get it, and if you get the glasses, grab Space Harrier 3d, too.

no I didn't manage to get Master System Choplifter. I have the rom on m HHD though, and also all the Master System roms on CDR for Dreamcast. hehe, and it murders the NES version. not as good as the 8-bit 1985 arcade remake Sega did, which the Master System version is based on.

You need Teddy Boy!

Grab Phantasy Star!

I've owned the SMS cart long before I won this auction, believe me... (that's the game I was talking about in my original post) One of my favorites of all time.

Are Genesis controllers directly compatible or do I need a special adaptor?

Oh yeah, thanks for the recommendations, guys... the SMS doesn't get nearly enough love, around here or just in general. I will definitely be trying the Ultima 4 and some of the other mentioned games. Was Psycho Fox any good again?

I got one for free from a friend, and then I accidentally spilled coffee all over it. Never touched it again, I'm sure its all sticky and shit.

What a crappy system. NES ftw.

I got mine for free from my aunt, with altered beast, great football, a defective light phaser AND phantasy star (though the battery was dead). good times.

Aztec Adventure
Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Double Dragon (2 player FTW!)
Rocky
Time Soldiers (i could never figure out wtf was going on in that game)

I bought a Mark III (all of them) and sold them shortly afterwards. There's JUST NO FUCKING POINT. And I'm as militant about Sega as anyone.

I 2nd the purchase of Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap. Beautiful game.

And if you want to play the best rendition of Spiderman, get that for the Master System as well.

I was a big fan of Spy Vs. Spy. Played that all the time.

Sonic even makes a brief appearance in the ending and just like Revenge of Shinobi, there's an ending where your girlfriend dies.

Zillion

Enduro Racer
Longbow
Ys the Vanished Omens

Master System was awsome

SMS was one of my favs - and I THOUGHT I owned/remember nearly every game - but WTF was LONGBOW?!?!?

Wonderboy in MS and Zillion were awesome games - I really like Kenseiden also... but not sure if it aged well. Zillion 2 was a good action game, but a cake walk and nothing like the original Zillion.

haha sorry the game was called Lord of the sword. For some reason I remember it as longbow -_-

I am a nintendo fanboy, but I admit that Master System had some damn good games. Zillion ftw.

Anyone else's controllers break? On my SMS, the pad fell off leaving nothing but the plastic buttons under it. Those aren't meant to be played with and soon that plastic started coming off :lol

Some of my buttons stopped responding.

Shinobi is hard enough in the later levels, even harder when the jump button only works 50 percent of the time.

My picks:

Wonderboy III: The Dragons Trap - buy it complete so you can use the password in of the instruction booklet screenshots, it starts you off maxed out iirc.

Enduro Racer - Isometric dirtbikes jumping over Ford Model T's - better than thee arcade!

Action Fighter - Spy Hunter with more vehicles - whats not to like?

Penguin Land - Mr. Driller takes care of an egg...the first battery backup game on Master System iirc.

Zillion - Protip: The symbols are actually numbers if you cover one side...makes the game 100 times easier. Find the anime OVA series while you're at it, great stuff! And stay away from Zillion 2!

Oh amy...

My first system was a SMS and I'm DAMN proud of it.

My favorites:

Gangster town(best Phaser game ever)

Ghostbusters(Had a lot of depth compared to some other games)

Phantasy Star (The Dungeons were great)

Pro Wrestling

Wonder Boy 1-2-3( The trilogy was great, I want a comeback from this franchise)

California Games

and

Rambo(First blood) Part 2

Since when do M60's include RPG Rockets?

you guys need to try Master System emulation and play the Japanese Mark III versions of Master System games like Phantasy Star and R-Type to hear just how good the FM Synth music is

:lol Yeah I forgot about Rambo...I've never been certain about it being a port of the C64 game (or vice versa) or just seperate games, but both were pretty fun...they're basically a less intense Commando.

I love my Master System. I was the first system I ever owned (not counting my C64). I spent so much of my youth playing that system and I still love hooking it up every month or so for some good memories. Of course I will recommend some games, many of which have already been listed but there is a reason they keep coming up!

Must Play:

Phantasy Star
WonderBoy in Monsterland
Penguin Land
Shinobi
AfterBurner
Space Harrier
CALIFORNIA GAMES!!! (BMX stage FTW)
Safari Hunt (the intro theme is the best)
R-Type

Other Good Titles:

Rampage
Alex Kidd in High Tech World (just becaues it was different)
Alex Kidd and the Lost Stars
Quartet
GhostBusters
Aztec Adventure
Time Soldiers

zillion is the greatest mastersystem game. period.

EDIT: teddy boy was pretty sweet too :)
