I like Metal Gear Acid

:) Finally got round to playing it and man, I really like the game so far. Did wish it had standard MGS cinematics/voice acting but the game plays immensely well for the cardplay format they have for it. The story is weird.

Couple of questions:

1) is the turn/end important or is it part of the gameplay to end turns to allow enemies near you so you can take them out with stealth.

2) How do you know out opponents for a long time? I can't seem to knock them down for long. If I make them faint, they ALWAYS wake up before I get to move again

3) Is this snake snake from MGS 2 + 1? He looks a bit young but then I'm not a huge timeline expert. Its set sometime in 2018...

4) Any penalties for losing missions?3

any tips for being able to look around in advance? for a turn based game it seems a little hard to plan ahead, often (for me) resulting in the classic MGS 'spotted -> headless chicken mode'

You mean is it sometimes strategically important to end a turn prematurely? Yes. By ending a turn early, you do get hit with a cost of 4, but sometimes it's necessary when you're only holding a couple of shit cards. That way, after the opponents with less than 4 cost in queue can go, and you'll get another turn relatively quickly with a couple new cards.

Other than that I really don't prematurely end my turn very often. I take off-turns like you described to equip weapons and activate special cards.

2) How do you know out opponents for a long time? I can't seem to knock them down for long. If I make them faint, they ALWAYS wake up before I get to move again

Why knock'em out if you could kill them? To be honest I've never even noticed you could knock'em out. I guess that's just my normal MGS strategy shining through. I tend to try to eliminate all opponents really quickly with big guns before they see me. I think knocking them out probably just serves its purpose to let you slip by and not a lot else.

3) Is this snake snake from MGS 2 + 1? He looks a bit young but then I'm not a huge timeline expert. Its set sometime in 2018...

I think it's 2016, and yeah. Snake just looks kinda funky in general. I wonder if they're going to have a hard time fitting this series in as canonical down the road, even with the 12 years of buffer, so maybe they're breaking from the typical method of storytelling (and the look of snake) intentionally to leave themselves an out later, "didn't you notice how everything looked off in MGA? It's because it was a parallel dimension!" or some similar shit.

But yeah, Snake looks young. And weird. Different art direction.

4) Any penalties for losing missions?

Not so far as I can tell, other than having to start them over (duh).

Early on, it doesn't matter much. But eventually what you want to do is load up with enough COST - cards so that you can use the actions you want, and then destroy the cost so you get another turn quickly.

So while early game about all you can expect is to fire the famas and hope for the best, later you can fire it twice, then blow two more actions on Cost -8 or Cost -12 and start a second turn pretty much right away.

This also applies to knock out moves; if you have plenty of cost they are going to wake up before you can move, but if you keep the cost down you'll buy some time.

Brand new timeline. Just assume somewhere around MGS1/2, and then forget most of the plot points. Ghost Babel also had a nonsense timeline, but at least they explained it in the end...

No.

Hit triangle and start moving the camera around. Rotate with L/R, nudge the camera angle with the analog stick...that's about all you can do really.

While your cards are in hand, hit triangle to be able to scroll the whole map. Hit select (i think) to toggle view the relevant stats of all of the NPCs on the map.

If you already know about that, a protip is to make effective use of the nub to try to get an angled view of what's up. It can help at identifying vents and stuff.

But yeah, the game's just a little too zoomed out in general (which is probably to cover up the semi-sloppy graphics)--i wish you could just zoom.

What did they say about it? I always just assumed it was meant to be its own game and not really part of the timeline, just like MGA. (I'm still at the very end of MGS for GBC...can't beat Viper. Weaksauce, I know)

EDIT: I found a FAQ;the popular belief is that you're supposed to be
Raiden
but according to this:

Contrary to popular belief, this game is not merely a VR mission for Raiden.
Shown out of context, the last message from No. 4 suggests that the player
has been playing as Raiden, aka Jack, all along. This scenario is true, but
it only applies to the Special stages. No. 4 clearly says that these stages
are reenactments of Snake's battles. Raiden's stages, which have extra
challenges ("a few conditions"), are only available after the main game is
beaten.

don't mind me, just my typical "I wish I never bought this game and when the hell is zaptruder going to buy this piece of shit off of me" post.

carry on.

The MG timeline is like this

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater - 1964
Metal Gear - 1995
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake - 1999
Metal Gear: Ghost Babel - 2001
Metal Gear Solid - 2005
Metal Gear Solid 2 (Tanker) - 2007/Big Shell - 2009
Metal Gear Ac!d - 2016

Ofcourse MG:GB and Ac!d are spinoffs, but thats where they fit in as far as years go.

I think VG museum has the whole ending online now, but basically:

Completing the special stages reveals that the whole game was part of Raiden's VR training, and depending how you read into it, Jack/Raiden may actually believe galuade happened (at least until the giant mindfuck at the end of MGS2).

In any case, Ghost Babel always has cool points from me because:
-Metal Gear Babel (or whatever the name was) is the coolest design in the series. Gameplay, not so hot. But I really want to see a full shinkawa sketch of it.
-the part where
the hostage kid dies as his boobytrap collar blows up. Damn.

EDIT: What you say from the FAQ is also possibly true. But there isn't really enough evidence to prove it either way.

The way I played through MGS games, I normally don't kill enemies, I knock them out and play it the STEALTH way. Head shots with the MKii and or CQC. Fun :D

I might be wrong but all stages can be replayed and its hard to get a NO KILL Bonus if you have to kill them. Maybe I'll get a better series of CQC type cards later but I find it odd that I knock someone out..

say
move card : 4
punch: 4
end turn (should be 0).
total 8.

And the guy gets up before I can run away and hide.

I also used this combo once.

stun grenade.
pistol

and the guard gets up before I get to move again
