Lately I've been hankering for an RPG to play. I've got a PS2 so that kind of narrows it down-- no Baten Kaitos or Morrowind for me.

I'm debating between replaying an old game that I haven't beaten, like Parasite Eve 2 or Vagrant Story, or FF8. Ideally I'd already be playing FF8, but I can't get my playstation 2 to load it, so I'm kinda SOL.

I'm also considering playing a few gems from this gen, too. My buddy let me borrow Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, but I'm told that it's hard as hell. I'm not looking to drop 60 hours into a game, really. I will if the story is that long, but I don't wanna spend 40 of it just leveling up. He also let me borrow Star Ocean: Til The End of Time. I dunno. The other option is that I'm going to the video store later today, and I might rent Dragon Quest 8.

What does GAF think? Are there any games I didn't list, any RPGs from this gen, that I should consider playing? I think my video store has Suikoden 3, also, that I've never played, and probably a few other ones. Just throw some names out there and tell me what you all think, if ya don't mind. I appreciate it. (It's gonna be a rainy weekend up here with no studying at all, ugh.)

it's a little behind on the graphics curve, but it has more depth than any other RPG you can name

DQ8 is awesome but long. Shadow Hearts: Covenant is good and wacky and fun.

I'd stay the hell away from Star Ocean.

yeah, i absolutely adored Covenant. Best RPG on the ps2 this system, imo. and demi-- legaia 2 was very awesome, indeed.

Play Star Ocean 2 instead, that's at least bearable.

you know how covenant has a lot of charm in it's own unique way? SO3 is the opposite of that. mind numbing.

you should get dq8. I may never finish the game, but I don't really care. It's just a big beautiful world that treads the fine line of lighthearted joy and taking itself too seriously really well.

I'm not an RPG expert but I am loving DQ8. Highly recommend.
