I think yesterday's 360 leaks were planned.

There, I said it.

Whyelse would they shoot the special so long before air time? if the actual leaks weren't from within MS, they surely were counted upon to trickle-feed the hyped masses.

A picture of the console's displa wich most likely would have been well watched over, a dead on shot of the remote, out in the open for anyone to snap up, and thirdly, a controller shot that looks like a cropped official photo.

And there's not a TV in sight, not the further leaks of game screens everyone was counting on, not a TV far away in the background of one of the pictures, when the event should have been full of monitors to display the next gen prowess.

And why did MS take no action? the pics were plastered everywhere and no one was shy to say they were fron engadget, so MS couldn't not have know exactly where the leak was originating from....

Well they should have taken the time to make the 360 shot look a bit better if it was planned - the lighting was awful and made the colour scheme look crap, and we know MS realise the first console looked too big, yet that shot of the 360 makes it look bulky.

I agree though that it's pretty unbelievable - knowing how much money Microsoft has, and knowing how many times they've been in court, would you break an MS NDA? And if you would, wouldn't there be just as many people willing to break one with Nintendo or Sony? Yet we see no Sony leaked pics and one dodgy Nintendo projector pic which I doubt will come to anything, if it hasn't already been proven to be a hoax.

"It had to be said."

Yes, it had to be said, so I said it. I take full responsability for my act of disclosure...

:lol

On a related note, let me say another thing that should be said, starting threads at GAF with "There, I said it" is a bad idea indeed. There, I said that too! :lol

In the same way it was Engadget who first revealed the name "Xbox 360". With only an "MS insider" named as the source. Seems MS is using Engadget as a viral marketing vehicle to "leak" info deliberately this whole time. Would not surprise me in the slightest. I just hope Engadget has the common intelligence to be charging MS for the service.

In any case, Microsoft is really doing a pretty masterful job of creating interest in the 360. They seem to be creating a new round of interest every two weeks. Starting w/ GDC, then the our colony, then the MTV announcement, to the MTV special itself, going to E3, and then I'd expect it to continue throughout the year.

So, even after E3, I'd expect that they hold some things back. Personally, I don't think they need to announce a price. Leave that for later to grab another headline later. It's not particularly important right now. Also, 50% of big name games should be announced now and it'll be big enough to most likely win E3 and alot of hype. Announce another set of exclusives around the Japanese show in the fall, with maybe a few others before and after.

That also gives them an opporunity to wait until after E3, get some feedback on people's interest and refocus on any weaknesses that people think are there.

Although, as we've seen speculated already, I really think Sony isn't going to contest E3 as much with the PS3 as people expected. It's really too early and Sony needs to keep the interest in the PS2 & PSP up for another 18 months. Hyping and showing games for PS3 will signal to many that those games are what they should be looking towards, which would really, really hurt Sony in the short term.

Why would they purposely leak such a completely shitty poorly lit and bad angle picture of their multi million dollar investment? Do you really think that is the first impression they wanted thousands and thousands of consumers to have? C'mon. Really.

Yeah, the controller shot looks professional, but it's likely there are quite a few magazines and websites currently sitting on that exact photo and a full range of 360 shots to publish either after the MTV special on Thursday night or after their E3 conference.

What I think they should've done was released professional pictures of the 360 yesterday or today to counter that shit picture that's currently travelling around the 'net at lightspeed.

That was my thinking, especially considering Engadget is one of if not the top tech blogs in the US. They've also gotten a couple of other bits from the "insider" a month or so ago. They're an excellent outlet to leak info to, but i don't see much use for them after E3. Their focus is on tech first, and the hype on the Xº (yes, i'm really trying to make the most pretentious use of an abbreviation here :)) has been on the hardware itself. Sites like IGN and Gamespot can carry the torch and hype up the games.
