I want to play a hack n' slash (Musou). What's the best?

So I feel like playing a good hack and slash game. What are some of the best ones? I know Dynasty Warriors 8 just came out but I'm not feeling the full price thing since I've never played one before. That said, some games that have caught my attention are Warriors Orochi 3, Sengoku Basara Samurai Heroes, and Dynasty Warriors 7.

What does GAF recommend?

Warriors Orachi 3 is great from what I played of it but super hyper deluxe Empire edition is coming out sometime soon I believe so you should wait for that. Those are usually only 40/50 I believe.

Edit: You should probably update the title to say musou games if you meant what I think you did.

Sorry, when I said hack n slash I meant games like Dynasty Warriors. I thought that's what category those games fell under, I consider games like DMC, Bayonetta and GoW to be action games (maybe I'm wrong).

Waiting for Orochi 3 hyper super ultimate mega whatever edition is a good bet, other than that in terms of Musou games I really enjoyed DW Gundam 2 and 3 quite a bit and Trinity Souls of Zill Oill is pretty good if you'd like an RPG twist to it

just played bayonetta .... cannot recommend it enough... it is a great hack and slash (mgs rising, god of war and heavenly sword are also good choices)

Not the best but if you need to scratch that hack and slash itch there is a game called Ninety Nine Nights, it's not great but it's fairly similar to Dynasty Warriors and the like.

Edit: Just remembered Kingdom Under Fire aswell, hack and slash gameplay in a strategy sim.

Muramasa.

Sengoku Basara Samurai Heroes is the best of the bunch (not only of those games you listed but also in the entire genre) and I am saying that as someone who played a lot of KOEI Musou games. The story is fun, and so is the gameplay with great combo possibilities. That game should also be pretty cheap right now. Don't get too attached to it though because it's unlikely that we will ever get another one of those localized.

Between Orochi 3 and DW7 it would be tough call for me. I would say I prefer DW7 more from a story standpoint but Orochi 3 has more content and I think it has some more interesting gameplay systems.

You are not wrong, those are character action games. The games you are looking for are Musou games.

Fist of the North Star Kens Rage 2 (Shin Hokuto Musou)

So satisfying :D
and much better than the first game, runs at around 60fps too.

"Hack-and-slash" is such a worthless descriptor.

Anyway, isn't there a Hokoto no Ken version of the Musou games? Give that a shot. Everything's better with Kenshiro.

This thread highlights how ambiguous and useless the term "hack n' slash" has become. Ten years ago, I would have used that to describe Diablo.

Well I just started playing Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3, which is my very first Musou game btw as I never thought those games would be for me for some reason.
And my game clock now sits at 14 hours+. :)
Highly recommended and a blast to play obviously.

As a matter of fact I already ordered a bunch of other Musou games for when I'm finished with this one, which will probably take a while.

Sengoku Basara Samurai Heroes was my first taste of the genre, and it's still my favorite. Fewer characters and stages, but each are more unique and interesting IMO. Spent countless hours working towards the platinum trophy.

Warriors Orochi 3 is the best in the series.

Though maybe you should start with a non-crossover game like Dynasty Warriors or Samurai Warriors so you can learn who the characters are.

Dynasty Warriors 8 has been getting some high reviews, though I haven't played it yet and like you said, it is still full price.
