I will be shocked if Nintendo doesn't re-release or remake Super Mario 64!

It was a hit when Nintendo ported the monumental 3D Super Mario, Super Mario 64, from the Nintendo 64 Nintendo 64 to the Nintendo DS Nintendo DS . For me personally, Super Mario 64 DS was one of my favorite games to play on the ingenious handheld, alongside Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest IX, Golden Sun: Dark Dawn etc. But it's been 15 years since we saw the release of Super Mario 64 DS and while it can be argued that Super Mario Odyssey somewhat plays like Super Mario 64, it's not Super Mario 64. But I do think we'll see Super Mario 64 yet again on a new Nintendo console, if not the Switch Switch then certainly its successor. Super Mario 64 DS just can't be the last we've seen of Super Mario 64! There's no way Nintendo would let Super Mario 64 fade from gamers' memories. Super Mario 64 was a revolution! Bigger than Super Metroid! Bigger than Ocarina of Time! I truly believe we will see it again, old friend!

Dude. I mean you nail it. It was starting to fade from my memory a little before seeing the thread title.

Yeah I would love to play this again. It's been forever.

Umm, are you under the impression that this is how the game's legacy is progressing? Because I can ensure you that notion is misplaced. Speeruns of the game is happening all the time on Twitch where people try to set new records and such. Various gaming outlets and Youtube gaming channels are talking about it on a frequent basis. For the record, I also hope it gets a new remake, because I don't think it has aged all that well.

Super Mario 64 DS is an amazing port, with a lot of content, more playable content and stages.

The problem is that the d-pad of DS is straight terrible for it. It's an insult playing this game with d-pad, most of your movements are doomed to fail because of it.

If anything, this version should be the one receiving a remaster. Using new models and details.

Making you start the game as Yoshi is soooooo dumb. And the way the new levels are grafted onto the castle is kind of inelegant. It was novel for what it was, but I can't say I'd want the DS version to make a comeback.

I have to agree in that part though. If anything, Mario should unlock all of them.

I doubt you would even want a comeback of the original 64. The N64 analog is terrible and lose efficiency easly, making the game harder to deal with.

Yeah, game will need some tweaks either way. There's a distinct feel to the N64 original, but if someone wants that.... well, the cart still exists.

I thought there was just the fan remake running on Unity or Unreal Engine. But yes, I mean actually re-releasing Super Mario 64 one more time. An official re-release or remake by Nintendo themselves would be glorious and no doubt be very profitable given its legacy.

Nintendo doesn't do a lot of things that would makes sense. It wouldn't shock me at all.

You make it sound like its some niche game few people have discovered.

No, I don't think I am. It's just interesting with how much time has passed and new Nintendo platforms have come out since the DS, it makes me wonder if they're waiting for the right time to re-release Super Mario 64 one more time. Or maybe they don't think it's worth pursuing because of the Super Mario Maker series.

I have no clue. But I am willing to bet that Miyamoto was a bit freaked out by how good it was, and perhaps had no idea how to follow it up.
Weren't they going to make a sequel but then it got turned into Pikmin? Or am I misremembering what Super Mario 128 was?

Mario 64 DS changed marios model and restricted certain stars and abilities to certain characters. It added bloat to a game that was perfect as it was.

I want a comeback of the original Mario 64, not the original analog stick. Mario 64 plays amazingly well using modern sticks on emulators. So the original game code is fine, doesn't need any tweaks to play on modern controllers.

I think the DS version wasn't that good. Very much disliked how you had to switch between characters to get certain things done. The added levels were nice but I barely remember anything about them so I could do without those. A remake with modern graphics, sound, and slightly updated controls like the Crash and Spyro trilogies would be most welcome. I'd buy that shit in a heartbeat. Same for Sunshine.

Yes please, theres no reason NIntendo cant release all the Mario's and Zelda on the Switch.

Where is the Wii U port of Wind Waker? Its like waiting to be ported and for me to play
Also I want Pikmin 1, 2 and 3 lol

The original ages incredibly badly, and I've said before that I was never that impressed by the original game. A remake with solid visuals will probably change my mind. I already thought the DS game was significantly better. Not a big fan of the "open world" Super Mario games, but Super Mario Odyssey was quite good, hopefully we'll see a remake of Super Mario 64 to that standard in terms of visual presentation.

It's incredible they never put a sequel out on the N64.
They were working on Super Mario 128 for the Bulky Drive (64DD) , I even saw some screenshots in EGM. I guess when they decided that the DD was never going to be big they scrapped it. Another rumour is that some of that work went into Mario Sunshine.
What I would like to see is Super Mario 128 released - a true sequel to Mario 64 with modern graphics

I love the look of the original. It's the game that ushered in 3D properly, and is intrinsically tied to that time period. As such, it's not only okay for it to look like that, it actually kind of adds to the effect of playing such an instrumental part of gaming history. Bring in the frequent flat shading and smart art style choices, and I think it holds up way, way better than it should for Nintendo's first real 3D game.

That said, a remake could be so much fun. Even the tiny jump that was the DS + 8 years worth of experience with 3D games, gave us something really cool.

A revisit along these lines would be great.

Why? I am pretty sure that they would need to spend a ton of work to remake SM64 and it would sell less than a new entry in the series.

They already have some assets that could be used for a SM64 remake and with how well remakes have been doing lately I think 64 could possibly sell 7-10 million.

Yeah, whatever engine they used for Super Mario Odyssey they should be able to modify for a remake. I don't think Nintendo would have to start from scratch unless they're developing for Switch 2.

If anything, they should re-use those models and make themselves alot of remasters.

Mario 64 is being remade for the switch in Odyssey engine, in a compilation pack akin to the all-stars compilation for snes. Also included will be Mario Sunshine, and the Galaxy games. I can confirm this with 97.86% certainty.

Consider me tickled , Mr insider panda.

I would drool at the thought of Mario 64 with Odyssey graphics.

Though it would be cool, it is a classic that gets referenced and called back to a lot. Plus it has had a remake already, though as some have already pointed out the DS version did have some notable flaws (especially considering the lack of analog control). So my feelings are a tad mixed personally.

Also, I never could get over how the internet fooled me into thinking Waluigi was in the game when I was a kid. WALUIGI NEEDS MORE EXPOSURE TOO GOSH DARN IT! :messenger_angry:

It would be interesting if they made it like the Monkey Island Special Edition where you could switch back and forth between the original and modern graphics at will:

People would lose their minds and it would be a great showcase of how the gameplay is what its all about.

Man, I totally forgot how bland the modern graphics looked compared to the original
