I will be shocked if Nintendo doesn't re-release or remake Super Mario 64!

If by Sunshine you mean 96 levels of FLUDDless goodness then yes, yes I would prefer that.

So good! They were the perfect balance of skill and toughness that is missing from many later Marios.

Nintendo's gotten better about difficulty since the days of NSMB DS and Wind Waker ( :messenger_hushed: ), but agreed.

A challenge really gives a Mario game that final bit of brilliance, and it's kind of a shame that Nintendo doesn't feel comfortable moving on with the difficulty of the earlier Marios, outside of optional levels like these.

Still crazy fun. But the absence is felt.

I got an orginal gray fat DS with a copy of Mario 64 DS as a gift way back then. I was very, very unimpressed. Super Mario 64 was THE game that ushered in 3D, and it paired critically with the new N64 controller and its control stick. Moving Mario around a 3D space with that controller was a generation-defining experience.

I took ONE look at the package and was like, what? Mario 64 without a control stick? And this is supposed to be some years-later "upgrade"? I laughed at it and toyed around with the DS version as a joke. I did get a lot of use out of that DS though. It was very good for Castlevania.

For this to be the only re-release of this industry-shattering game is a travesty. Even more bizzaro because of how much Nintendo likes to re-release games.

Perhaps the people at Nintendo are afraid of the classics embarrassing their new work, and keep such games buried in "the vault" for when they need to fire a massive cannon. For example, when 3DS was doing crappy, it got Ocarina of Time. But it wasn't the silver-studded remake the game deserved, just a polished up portable game. At least it had a control stick, for god's sake.

I've wanted a new console version of Mario 64, Ocarina of Time and Star Fox 64 since before I could drive a car. I've moved on and accepted them as historical classics, I still have an N64 because it's still the definitive way to play these titles. The portable stuff they've done doesn't give these games enough credit. On the other hand, if they remade all of these titles correctly, how many people would skip new entries entirely. I mean, Mario Odyssey is a great game, but how good is it compared to a full on Mario 64 remake right next to it on the store shelf...competing with themselves. They would need to be lunatics to pit Star Fox 64 Remake against Star Fox Zero.

This is part of Mario's precise brand management. 64 would ruin their own egos. They can only put out a gimped portable version, out of the limelight.

I actually recently wrote an article about how a Super Mario 64 remake should be done (if you're interested!), I'm hoping it can be done in the style like Link's Awakening on the Switch, new graphics engine, but still have the game play how it did on the original system.

SM64 DS kind of deviated a little too much, it would be better if they stick closer to the original N64 game.

yeah really want a Super Mario 64 remaster.. As much as i'd love a Sunshine remaster as well, they should already be giving us this on Virtual Console. I mean, rather have them putting their energy into other projects.

If it's a remake, yeah I dont know why they wouldn't charge full price for it. I think it'd be system seller tbh.

I'd prefer it to be part of the rumored Mario 3D collection alongside the Galaxy games and Sunshine, but knowing Nintendo, we can't have that now can we? Especially if it'll be rebuilt from the ground up, which is probably the only way they could charge full price for a standalone release

Super Mario 64 DS is an amazing port, with a lot of content, more playable content and stages.

The problem is that the d-pad of DS is straight terrible for it. It's an insult playing this game with d-pad, most of your movements are doomed to fail because of it.

If anything, this version should be the one receiving a remaster. Using new models and details.
This right here.

I would only play it if it was teh DS version remastered with additional improvements including full analog control.

I played SM64 enough for 2 lifetimes when it was first out. I tried the DS version once and was just like "nope" due to teh controls. I would love to revisit the game with the additional characters etc.

They squeeze the impossible from their brands, i'm shocked that they haven't remake the game multiple times already :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

They really should remake or remaster all the mario games from gamecube to wii-U.
I miss a lot of mario games and it will be awesome to play it for the Switch.

What would really be nice is if they took a few hints from the remake that was done from the N64 code by fans, they fixed the frame rate (yes, you can run at well above 60fps) they added wide screen support... Nintendo would have to at least match what someone from the outside did... and add some sensible graphical tweaks in a way that doesn't break the feel of the game.

I agree

Now someone (Nintendo or otherwise) needs to change the camera controls to fully modern 3D / full control and I'll be happy
