IBM Using iPod to boot Linux on PCs. WOW

Looks like iPod fever has caught on to Big Blue. IBM has a yet unreleased iPod-based software for rescue, restore, and recovery of failed Windows PCs. I read this description of the software on Amit Singh's blog, whose group at IBM apparently created this stuff. If I understand this correctly (and I think I do), the iPod contains IBM's rescue software along with Linux. A crashed PC boots into Linux from the iPod, after which you get all kinds of rescue & restore functionality ... web browsing and all, even if the PC's drive is totally hosed. All this while the iPod keeps working normally as a music player as it would. The blog has pointers to further information, including a Windows Media demo of the thing.

Very cool. Incidentally, I've booted my Mac before using my iPod just for kicks. Works flawlessly except that the poor iPod HD tends to get kinda hot.

It really isn't that difficult of a concept. You can break it down to a usb hdd, and many many systems can boot from USB.

nothing really special, you can do that on with a thumb drive.

i heard installing windows on a 1gb thumb drive will give you like 5 second boot times and make your computer a ton faster.

i wanna know if this is possible with windows? also what about the thumb drive failing? can you read/write/access the thumb drive limitless times?

I've both used my iPod to boot OSX 10.4, Linux, and run iPodLinux on my iPod. As a device its extremely versatile.

Yeah and I think I have some music on it somewhere :D
