The 2006 Game Developers Choice Awards are just around the corner, and the group today announced the slate of would-be winners for its March 22 presentation ceremony.

Hosted by the Game Developers Conference and presented by the International Game Developers Association (IGDA), the nominees are chosen and voted on solely by developers, providing a look at what industry professionals think are praise-worthy games.

"Every year, thousands of nominations are submitted by developers from around the world," said IGDA executive director Jason Della Rocca in a statement. "Voting on the final recipients will be extremely competitive, and who can spot excellence and creative achievement better than the creators themselves?"

To make sure games were not overlooked and that the end slate of titles were representative of developers worldwide, all IGDA members were given the chance to nominate games free of charge. Five finalists in each category were then selected by a 20-person advisory board, and the IGDA membership then votes on the winner of each category.

This year, God of War leads all games with six nominations, followed closely by a quintet of nods for Shadow of the Colossus. Project Gotham Racing 3, Guitar Hero, and Psychonauts each received three nominations. GameSpot's game of the year for 2005, Resident Evil 4, only garnered a single nomination, that one in the Visual Arts category.

The 2006 Game Developers Choice Awards ceremony will take place Wednesday, March 22 at 6:30p.m. at the San Jose Civic Auditorium. RE4 PWNED!

But I do like those other 5 games that got the multiple nods.

Other than a bit of a snubbing for Resident Evil 4 in several categories I can't complain. There are several game awards trying to become the "Oscars of videogames." It seems to me that IGDA should get that moniker since it's actually made up of developers. Unlike the commercial cash-in that is the Spike games awards.

How did God of War win a nomination for Writing? I mean, sure it was good, but was it deserving on a nod?

And boo for no RE4 recognition.

RE4 was hte best game of the GEN fuck this shit.

It was a fantastic game, but i disagree with anyone who thinks any single game should "definitely" be the game of this gen. There have been a ton of great games in a wide variety of genre's. I understand that the Gamecube has had lean times, but still.

I do agree it deserves better representation at the awards.

COD2 in audio :lol

shows how much these people know about sound design. And what was so special about GOW in sound? It was completely forgetable in that area.

Music aside, audio was one of sotc's weakest aspects. The sound effects weren't great and transitions between songs were rough.

P.S. GO PSYCHONAUTS

What studidness. Does RE4 no exist?

*grumble grumble*

God of War deserves all the accolades it's getting, but RE4 deserves more imo.

I don't think Animal Crossing deserves all that much praise. It's a rehash with an online mode.

I'm enjoying the game, but I don't think the awards are called for.
