IGN: DS going online with Pokemon?

People are speculating that Nintendo would also release some kind of wireless USB dongle that would let you make any internet-enabled computer a hub to get your DS online. Is that possible?

It seems believable...

We'd have to buy it to play online, so the potential number of online players will depend of the sales of this dongle.

If they use standard accessories, this number is bigger because some people already have it. And if they don't, they'd have to buy the dongle anyway... so they could just buy a wireless card instead.

edit : There will be many tutorials by that time for the noobs, don't worry ^^

Much like the Rumble pak, wireless adapter, and mic this "dongle" could be included with the online game Nintendo is developing.

Actually it would be a cool idea. People with a wireless router obviously wouldn't need it. But for people with just a broadband modem or a wired router (me), a dongle with a simple included program would be cheap, easy, and plug-and-play (in theory). This would be a lot easier than ditching your existing system to get the thing online (Again, assuming you aren't using a wireless router).

Pokemon is a pretty logical property for Nintendo to take online. Not only is it immensely popular but communication and interaction with other players is an important part of the gameplay. In fact, the Pokemon games have evolved to include more and more of those aspects.

Ah, maybe someday my dream of 30 player F-Zero races will come true. As much as I love the idea of Pokemon, Mario Kart, Advance Wars and Smash Bros online, F-Zero would be my killer app.

F-Zero is my most wanted online Nintendo title. Yet, a DS version does nothing for me:( I'm channeling that voodoo towards getting them to do a Revolution version:)

Not really, that'll only be for the people who need an easy plug-n-play solution around a PC, maybe a non-tech savvy parent setting it up for their kid. And think about the handiness of such a thing, if your college doesn't have a WiFi network but does have a PC attached to broadband, just plunk it in to a USB port and use that.

That being said, you wouldn't need this to go online, it'd just facilitate easy setup. If you already have a WiFi network, or are in a hotel/restaraunt/lobby/bookstore/whatever with WiFi, it should work just fine without anything extra.

I'd be quite happy with a DS version as I love F-Zero X (much more than GX), only I'm not really thrilled about the idea of playing it without an analogue stick.

I'll wait till I see just what Nintendo are cooking up for Revolution's controller before I get my hopes up for an F-Zero on that system. I can't imagine that they'd drop analogue sticks though, so it should be fine.

Of course if Nintendo ever wakes up and realises F-Zero titles don't sell, we could be in real trouble. Sleep Nintendo, sleeeeeeep...

If the Revolution acts as a router or whatever for the DS. I WILL BE PISSED! I don't want my bandwidth to connect some kid living accross the street from me to the internet! Hopefully there's something that prevents that! Imagine you being the only one to own a Revolution in your neighbourhood and you have all these bastards leeching off you.

bah, Metroid totally slipped my mind. i guess add that to my list.

as for that news story hoping for some news on the online stuff this thursday, i don't see that happening. i suppose it's possible, but when has Nintendo ever used NoE to announce anything?

So which company will have an announcement now?Konami? Capcom? and now Nintendo in March? where did you saw these?im confused.....
Capcom, next week.

I don't blame people who have the "I'll believe it when I see it" stance (the same was said of Nintendo adopting optical disc media ... which they did, five years later, lol).

What I think Nintendo will do is start a *basic* Nintendo Online network for the DS this year.

That'll probably mean support for games with minimal or no server use, mostly a P2P system network, with basic stuff like online multiplayer modes, item downloads (ie: new Pokemon or new items for Animal Crossing), and online rankings. Nothing quite as elaborate as say XBox Live.

Maybe they'll do something like an online Nintendo Club, where you can earn points for the Nintendo Club service as well.

Third-parties like Square-Enix may be involved in this.

I'm assuming you'll be able to set it to only allow connections that you authorize, a lot like a wireless router uses either WEP keys or even MAC address authentication since we do know that the DS has a MAC address.
