August 26, 2004 - You may not be familiar with Fable if you've been living in Antarctica (mad ups to my ice-cold brothers), but the rest of the world is well-versed in Microsoft's upcoming RPG. With September 14 looming, your pals at IGN Xbox are bringing you an endless stream of lovely Fable coverage, with the crowning jewel being our online exclusive review this Friday.

Over the past few days, we've been taking a look at the different attributes that define your character's abilities. First we looked at Strength, then Will, today we close out by looking at Skill.

Skill

Skill doesn't really say much as to what this attribute controls, but it's quite an important stat to worry about. If you want to be a thief, a merchant, or a ranger, then skill is where it's at. Like strength, skill is broken up into three different traits -- Speed, Accuracy and Guile -- each one upgradeable seven times.
Speed: Not only will you move faster, but as you improve your speed trait, your rate-of-fire with ranged weapons will greatly increase. And if you want to be a ranger or a thief and focus on non-confrontational combat, you're gonna need to be able to reload your bow quickly. Speed also improves your dexterity in hand-to-hand combat and allows you to swing a melee weapon faster to get in more attacks.

Accuracy: Ranged combat is defined by accuracy. The higher you go, the wider your range for kill shots and the more damage you do with a ranged weapon. A character with maxed speed and accuracy can decapitate an entire bandit camp from afar. It's quite a sight.

Guile: A dual-purposed trait, increased levels of guile give you new thieving skills, but also increase your ability to swindle merchants. A character with maxed guile can pick pockets and locks and buy items at a low price. If you want to play the merchant game of buying low and selling high, you can't succeed without pumping some XP into guile.
