IGN Resident Evil: Deadly Silence review

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.

So, for the most part, Resident Evil: Deadly Silence is a great conversion of Resident Evil that tweaks a bit here and tightens a bit there. What was good about the PlayStation version is still good here on a smaller scale, and the added elements do a decent job enhancing the experience and shaking things up for those who've experienced the game a hundred times before. But, honestly, it's hard to ignore all the little quirks in gameplay and presentation that were a bit easier to disregard in the earlier days of 3D adventuring, so if we look at it as a new title instead of a revival, well, it's not a whole lot better than a good but flawed game design.
8.0 Presentation
Resident Evil uses a huge capacity cartridge to store all the PSX media, including all the FMVs in good quality. It plays it safe for an M rated game, though, so green blood until you change it.
8.0 Graphics
The game looks really good on the DS, and in some places it looks even better than the PlayStation game. Animation is still robotic and stiff, but that adds to the B-movie cheese.
8.0 Sound
Love it or hate it, the horrendous voice acting is back in full force on the DS. But the audio quality of that and the moody music and sound effects is stunningly good.
6.5 Gameplay
Even if it's a fun and fulfilling classic, the camera system still clunks up the action something fierce, something that's not as forgivable this time around.
6.5 Lasting Appeal
The game can still be completed in a few hours if you know your stuff, but at least it's extended with unlockables for the multiplayer, and there's a new mode after the main one's over.
7.0
Decent OVERALL

IGN gives the game the lowest score? o.O

Seriously, I'm surprised it got as high as it did on 1UP and GS. I figured if anyone, they'd be the ones with the balls to realize that shit like this shouldn't be rewarded. I mean, I'm not against ports, but if you're making a remake of a game that has already been ported to several other systems, let alone already remade, and it doesn't in any way improve (and in this case it actually goes backwards, and by measures of generations), critics should not reward that.

Why won't Capcom completely remake RE2? *cry*

Whoever buys this game deserves to get punched in the nuts.

Why should someone get punched for buying a good game?

I've never owned the original (only the remake), and I absolutely adore it, so I'll be getting this.

Pretty average review. Unlike GameSpots review, Craig barely mentions the game's problems at all. Gameplay flaws result in such a score?

An 8 was probably the highest I was ever expecting for the game, but to give a 7 and say 'gameplay problems' and not justify the issues is kinda silly in a review.

Ah well, buying this regardless.

If RE wasn't a terrible game to begin with I would have no problem with this port. There's always a good reason and market for a handheld port of a popular console game. I thinking most of the bitching is due to the fact that it's a DS game (bullshit assertions FTW.) Anyway, I'm guessing the additions are pretty good, it's getting the highest scores that a DS RE port could possibly get.

Good thing it isn't terrible, then.

Wait, so do you like the game or not?

I think RE2 would score higher actually. That one has decent voice acting, better graphics and is overall a better game. Just add the standard upgrades.

I don't like the game but people do, and they might enjoy playing the game on a handheld. I just don't see what all the bitching is about.

CVX freak since you read this thread:

Where have your FAQs on Gamefaqs for RE4 been? I thought you were going for some kind of I'll have it all documented record on gamefaqs, but alas whatever.

Is there ANYTHING new to this game...did they add anythign from the later series that was missed in this? Like the foot dragging?

A hater I like. :P

Honestly people, if you don't like RE, then don't buy it, but don't let your tastes ruin MY chances for getting RE on the go. Seriously. Yeah, a new RE would be nice, but then the current ones on a handheld are also nice.

I think the hate comes from two ideas:

1. Already remade on Cube, and I think rereleased on DC.
2. OMG WTF MORE RE4 BUT ADD STRAFE AND FIRST PERSON MODE LOLZ AND ONLINE PLAY. AND GRENADES.

So, yea. Mainly, lack of appreciation for the earlier games in the series, and frustration with Capcom's blatant cash grab.

Sorry... I kinda just never got around to it. :/ I don't know why. Something about RE4 just made it, well, unFAQable to me.

Deadly Silence is fair game, though. Writing a new FAQ from the ground up for that one. :P

Yep, I even noted it in my impressions for REDS in the impressions thread. RE4, the REmake and the various re-releases have screwed this game over from the beginning. It's doing fairly well, score-wise, too.

it wouldn't be so bad if they put a bit more bells and whistles on the old PS game, it looks just like it was...worse even.

do you honestly think I'd perma ban for some isolated incident? Not that this is up for discussion anyway, but this comment was only one of many violations of tos.

How has Deadly Silence been doing in Japan? Good? Bad?

Eh, okay. Sold around 27K in its first two weeks, which isn't anything to run home about, but not exactly the end of the world for Capcom. It's doing better than stuff like Ouendan. :lol
